What does this mean? QOS congestion controls

I have seen this extract from a blue post posted on many boards

If your 'Home' connection latency is low and your 'World' connection latency is high, that frequently indicates that there is some sort of QoS congestion controls being applied to your internet connection, at either the micro (LAN) or macro (WAN) level. A common symptom would be that you would be able to chat, but not to cast.

My HOme connection latency is low and World connection is high I can't cast, but I can chat to moan about my lag and disconnecting in battlegrounds.

What are Quality of service congestion controls? I have never heard of them before and what can I do about it if this is the cause of my lag?

Hi Maxxy

Quality of Service congestion controls are when an ISP assigns certain packets to differing priorities, meaning that normal web browsing or email packets aren't affected if there's a lot of gaming packets being sent over a network. The browsing packets will be set to a higher priority than the gaming ones, so as not to effect normal internet usage.

This means that sometimes people can experience lag or latency in-game, as the packets used by the game to communicate between the client and the server are being assigned to a lower priority, meaning they have to wait to get through while other packets (i.e. browsing or email packets) are going through first.

Basically though, if you're concerned about Quality of Service protocols enacted upon your connection, you would need to speak to your network provider.

Thanks for the quick reply with an explanation. But if my ISP, which is a big ISP, was causing the problem, then how come there are so few people with the same problem. If my ISP did this, then surely everyone who used Virgin and played WoW would be on here complaining and complaining in the battlegrounds too, but they aren't as far as I know.

I can never play Isle of conquest or Alteric Vally at any time, since Cataclysm I have never been able to play them because of lag. It is not just sometimes, it is all the time.

Well we can test this if you create a pathping to your server when you're experiencing this lagging behaviour:

Please post that here so we can look into this with you

When I started this it was about 1000 and then after some flying round it went up to 10,000 over an area with a lot of mobs. I got disconnected twice or 3 times during the 325 seconds.

You must have missed it then as there were loads of Virgin customers on here complaining when cataclysm went live and the new communication protocol used by WoW fell foul of some ISPs traffic management software.

I'm not a Virgin customer but apparently there was a big thread on the Virgin forums and Virgin eventually admitted that it was their traffic management causing the problems and would look into it.

Spare a thought for people like me stuck on O2 till July when my contracts up, who havent had a word or admission out of O2 and have effectively not been able to raid or do BGs since December - we all know its their traffic shaping as it kicks every day at exactly Midday and is virtually unplayable till 2am, which coincidently are the hours that O2 restrict bit torrent and peer to peer traffic !!!!

Thanks for that reply, it seems virgin have fixed the issue and nobody has posted anything about world of warcraft since the 2nd February. I played Alterec Vally today and had world at 12,000ms and somebody else had it at 13,000ms, well stressful.

Sorry to hear about your situ, you must be getting more done in real life though. I haven't tried doing raids yet cos I've been building up my character, probably will get lag there too, especially 25 man raids, can't see that not lagging.
