Gold...how much is enough?
|
Edited by Grimthalas on 08/03/11 10:48 (UTC)
Total noob question. I'm level 41 now, and wondering how much gold 'I should have', if there is such a thing. Obviously taking into account this is my first character.
I have been selling stuff in the AH, and so far have been able to afford all new skills, the mounts, etc, but I am still curious how much a reasonable amount of money for my level would be, considering I don't know if there's expensive stuff I could/should be saving for. In other MMOs you dont need much money at early levels but then when you reach a certain level you are better off having saved because you can suddenly buy a certain thing or things that are widely considered 'essentials' at that point. |

Gold only plays a small part in this game all you really need is enough to buy skills and repairs flasks too if you raid unless you are into vanity pets and mounts then atleast 1000g at any time on you is enough.

Try to aim for 1000 gold once you hit lvl 60. You need 300 to be able to purchase your flying mount. After that, the costs will ramp up exponentially, needing over 5000 gold to further increase your riding (altough that is optional).
1000 gold at 60 should be easy enough to obtain even with a completely new character. Don't buy too much from the AH (or better, don't buy anything at all). Only sell stuff. Loot everything and keep selling what you do not need. |

Thanks for the replies.
If 1000g at lvl60 is a reasonable target, I can say I'm ok :) |

Don't worry about gold at all for now. You'll need a few hundred for the flying skill and a few extra gold for skills but that will come with quests. Once you hit endgame, any mats and items you farm are worth a great deal more than anything at low level, so that's when you should concentrate on money.
You could spend a few weeks farming 10k at lv40, or simply level to 85 and then make that same 10k in a few days tops. Low level is best spent enjoying the game, questing, exploring content and having fun. |

First of all, I aggree.
Don't worry about how much you have or must have, aslong as your able to buy training, drinks and some food, your ok. Allthough I have a lot (really, a lot) of caracters, I try to have at least a basic of 10-50 Gold on themm. (So if !!*! happens, I can transfer some gold). (Cause, you feel really bad, if your down to 50 silver at level 59:p) So keep on having fun leveling, save some money, by not doing crazy stuff (don't buy at the AH:D) and whenn your hitting 85, and whenn you have bought all stuff you wanted... there is a pretty nice bonus, called the 'Hairy Mammoth' mount, which will cost you 19.000 Gold. (So, if you wanna be a real smug... save for that mount:P) |
|
When I started this character (my first) I made a big deal about having "enough" gold. I made between 3-500g a day from about level 30ish so I was able to get what I needed (skills, mounts and stuff from AH).
By the time I got to level 40 I had almost 10k but never really got close to spend what I made in gold. I'd say that 2000g is a nice amount to have as it gives you a chance (or freedom) to buy a bit of gear from time to time if you don't get what you need from quests or drops. The 1000g at level 60 might be enough if you don't use AH much. |

All you really need is enough gold to pay your repair bills, anything beyond that is pure luxury.

Well, being able to buy the riding skills at levels 20, 40 and 60 would be nice, and also dual talent spec at level 30. But you shouldn't have problems getting gold for these things unless you're a massive spender. Repair bills are a tad of a joke at lower levels, they never really impressed me. Spell skills and profession skills were more expensive :P |

as much as you can. you will need some 10k at higher levels ,buying fast speed flying 4-5k ,enchants ,gems & everything. Gather as much as you can ,or need.

as much as you can. you will need some 10k at higher levels ,buying fast speed flying 4-5k ,enchants ,gems & everything. Gather as much as you can ,or need. Technically you dont need gold for these things. Fast flight speed is not essential but is merely a perk or an upgrade but will no way stop you from being able to play to the best of your ability. Do you need uber fast flying in order to tank / heal / dps / pvp better? While enchanting and gemming can be expensive it will by no means require vast amounts of gold. In my guild most of us are happy to provide free proffessions to each other whether it be consumables, flasks, enchants or gems. Of course this is not everyone but it is very much a 'you scratch my back ill scratch yours' community. Unless you are in to buying the latest gear, some rare companion pets or an expensive mount or two I do not think it is necessary to have more than 2k at any given time. (And i mean that at level cap) Sure it is nice to have a vast sum of gold stashed away but that is purely a cushion and is in no way essential. |

OP is level 41. Enchants are irrelevant at that level. We're not talking about lev85s here. Lev85s would need some enchants, yes. (Not on every greenie, but IMO ilvl346 and above is enchant-worthy.) |

Haha I forgot all about spells and skills, yeah you'll need money for those too. Ultimately I class riding skills as luxury expenses since you don't need them but sure they're definitely helpful.
/shrug. I can't say this with 100% certainty as I've not tested this, but I'm pretty sure that gems and enchants are gravy even for heroic 5 man dungeons. If you're in a pre-made group with no LoTD buff then your coordination will get you through the dungeon. If you're in a PUG then the 15% buff will boost you more than gems and enchants will. Gems and enchants are icing on the cake. If your ilevel is too low or you don't move out of the fire, they won't make any difference. |

Trust me ,if it's your main ,you will want it :) & yes ,you don't want to fly around with 150% speed mount when you can go double fast. Get as much gold you need. doesn't mean to spend all time on gold ,but when you see you will need some more, just go gather it :) for your goal. I'm saying this in advance ,when you hit higher levels ,so yea it's nice to have some gold already. (for trainings-mount-class-etc) Sorry ,who disagree with me ,but question here is ,how much is enough ,so :) higher levels do take some gold ,at level 41 you don't need any actually ,but gather it for what you'll need. |
|
Amount of required money depend on your needs. If you want to collect pets, mounts, learn all glyphs for your class then you need a lot of golds, but if you do not need in pets, you need on;ly for one mount for each riding skill level and you want to have only one build of talents and glyphs then you do not need in money too much.

Thanks for all the replies guys.
I have one major glyph that increases the range of charge as I thought it would come handy in the battlegrounds, and I reckon it does. :) As for minor and prime ones I just didnt find any in AH that were usable or desirable at my level. I reckon I'll want every mount that isnt just for cosmetics, as in proper mounts that improve on the mount you have (like the swift horse I got at lvl40 which is noticeably faster than the lvl20 mount). I'm not into buying a mount just for looks though, although if its a reward for actual gameplay i.e. earned not purchased, then I also tend to go for them. (For example in Lord of the Rings Online you get nice mount if you get the highest rep with certain factions in the game, so on my main I ended up grinding rep with practically every faction, ending up with a nice collection of horses). But if its just about buying the horse, whether with game money or real world money, it just puts me off. About gems and enchants, I have no idea about those yet. I guess they are added to a weapon or armour to improve it. Closest thing I have used are legendary weapons in LOTRO, which you level up and customise, and you can add certain runes to them to improve your stats. But also there, they are aimed at higher level characters. What level are people likely to start expecting me to have gems/enchants? Are they also bought off AH and/or crafted? In other MMOs I have always taken the route of crafting most things rather than using AH, but that leads to crafting alts to be able to have all the useful professions. In WoW I think I'd rather stick to one main character, I just dont have the time these days. |

Max level, that is level 85. Before that you replace gear way too fast for it to be worth to enchant something.. |
|

Gems are only available after you've reached level 60 and entered outland. After that, you'll occasionally run into items that have sockets; slots for gems. Buy some cheap green level gems from the AH to socket those items.
Don't worry about enchants unless you are an enchanter yourself. Enchants (as well as high quality gems) are very expensive and when you are leveling you will replace your items quite fast. I'd only start realy worrying about gems and enchants when you are level 85. Same goes for glyphs, although glyphs last forever these days, so it never hurts to get one if you find one cheap on the AH. In WoW, you are only allowed 2 professions. Usually, only 1 of those is a crafting profession. Thus, it is impossible to craft everything yourself and you need to rely on the auction house to buy the items other players have crafted. As for mounts; after regular flying, you can obtain 2 further levels of flying (artisan and master). Both costing 4000 gold each, so 8000 gold to the highest flying level and that's not counting the mounts themselves. It is rather personal to determine if that is worth it, as can be concluded by the comments in this thread. Further levels of flying give you no other benefit except going even faster. For some people, that is not worth the extremely high costs, for other people it is. Remember, that you do need that flying level in order to be able to ride mounts like dragons and other cool beasts. :) |
