For me it's a toss-up between Iain (M.) Banks and Terry Pratchett. Both are absolute geniousesses when it comes to writing deep, thought provoking yet humorous tales with wildly differing styles.

Neil Gaiman. He spoiled comics for me as almost nobody else who writes them does them so well. His books (unillistrated) are simply beyond reproach, for me.

As for classics I'm a Wells/Vernian.

I do enjoy Pratchett in both his early and current styles of work... I guess I have to class him as a favourite because I've read almost everything he's published :P

I'd love to say that Susanna Clarke is one of my favourites, her first books was unbelievably good but as far as I know she's only written 2 and 1 (which I haven't read) is an anthology.

I'm hoping she has a long and fruitful career.

Iain M Banks, Frank Herbert, George R R Martin, Steig Larsson...and many, many, many, many, many, many, many more.

Good job I use the library a fair bit...if I actually bought every book I've read, I wouldn't get through my own front door for them ;)

And no, I'm not interested in a Kindle.. I like proper printed paper :)

Fiest and Eddings <3

Haven't actually read any of Gemmell's stuff.

On the topic of Fiest however, I reckon his quality of writing went down after the Riftwar Sage / Daughter of the Empire trilogy.

highly recommend reading some Gemmell, especially the Drenai books. Legend is quite simply one of the best books i have ever read.
i have yet to read an author that can write a death scene like Gemmell. You actually feel the characters death.

RIftwar would be my personal favourite of his series's. Also loved the Serpantwar Saga, though not sure if the 4th book was neccessary
