With many theorists and scientists predicting 'immortality' within the next 20-40 years, and the prospect of living 'forever' becoming a reality, what are your opinions?

Would you like to live forever? Take everything into account when you answer this, you would need money, housing, probably have to work ALOT, population restriction would likely be implemented until Mars is fully terraformed, would your loved ones take the same path? If not could you see them go?
What is your opinion?

Eternal life is something I support, however, your question isn't directly relative. I want all to live forever, the entire universe to perpetuate and evolve to its full potential. That doesn't mean that I, as an individual, want to live without ever dying - this, through my perception, is a part of the package. "All the flourishing things will return the the source, it is the flow of nature - an eternal decay and renewal."

So much space, need to see it all...

But yeah, while it'd definitely be interesting, just to see how things turn out to be, maybe find out more about the physics behind the world, I honestly wouldn't think I'd cope mentally seeing everything become slightly more !#@% (yeah, I'm like that), and see everything I once knew and loved go, never to return (damn, I hate nostalgia for that reason).

Would make for a fascinating psychology study though, to see how people reacted, and whether or not we could even manage staying alive for so long.

It was fairly relative :) I asked if you would like to live forever not if you would like others too.

Personally I have a very similar veiw to Prosit. There is SO much to learn and see, to explore and achieve. I want to be there for the teraforming of Mars, I want to be there when we create spaceships capable of reaching other solar systems. I want to be there for everything! Should the chance ever appear.. I will be taking it.

Eternal life I'd experience as a very unique form of torture. I wouldn't mind living long enough to build up a lot of knowledge in various different subjects, and living to apply that knowledge in a way that was meaningful and helpful in some way if I were fortunate...

But think of the downsides (besides population control, which you've mentioned). The older you get, the more likely it is that you'll experience unpleasant or painful events. The cumulative effect of those experiences over more than the average human lifespan would likely create an awful lot of individuals with a very long lifespan who had no will to live. So you'd also have to consider a 'get out' clause for people who change their minds. Imagine experiencing something really horrific and reliving it for a hundred years or more.

It would only seem mildly palatable to me if reality resembled Star Trek. Then I reckon I could stand to live a few hundred years.

Who wouldn't want to live forever? In doing so you'd never have to lose a loved one or a close friend, or have to stop playing WoW ;)

It's only a matter of time before Science discovers a way for us to live far, far longer than we do today.

If this is the case, who wouldn't? And if you get bored just jump from a great height:)
But yeah it would bring alot of problems with it.

Also did you know that yoga slows down the decay, though you still die around the same age, it's that you are more healthier later on. And no I do not practice it myself.

The latest series of Torchwood touches on the concept of everyone living forever (But mainly what happens if humans just can't die). The problem is the rescources required and frankly the only reason we want to live forever is because we fear having our lives end.

I would prefer eternal youth to eternal life. But if we're going to be stuck on this planet forever then no I'd rather be out in space to enjoy immortality.

I'm a believer that we are immortal in one way: When we die prematurely our consciousness is transferred to a parallel universe where we didn't die and that the transfer is seamless.

Intersting topic

We need to talk, but in a diffrent thread.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Is it not more likely we will extend lifespan like we have been doing since cavemen learned to farm the soil. Each age we got older. Farm stone age, bronze age, iron age, Dark Age(reversed longevity, people died younger),renaissance, industrial age, postWW2, computer age.

There have been a few exceptions, some of the greater empires had golden ages where they almost rivaled the industrial age, where the privileged lived to die of old age. Roman, Greek, Aztec, Maya, Inca, to name a few.

Older people seem energetic and independent as long as I can remember, but people say that before the 1970s they were not seen as much, they tended to stay at home or in pensioners homes for old people.

If we extend the average life expectancy by 5 to 10 years per generation it will reflect more what is happening to people. We can do that with the technology we are improving on right now, and can continue this as long as the world situation allows it. Lets not forget the disaster that is more likely to befall all people on earth in a generation or 2.

To think they invent a way to extend life exponentially is pseudo science.

I think we need to worry more about being able to save the human race from itself and the growing consumer demands. Soon the earth will say sold out….

A greatly extended life would be great, but forever (note; I'm assuming you stay at a decent age physically for all, or perhaps most, of the time)? And even then, only if some other things had come to pass as well, like the ability to remove memories from the brain and keep your perception of time at the same level.

But, no, I wouldn't like to live forever. It would get boring after a while unless a lot of people picked it and you would pretty much have to teach history, unless you're prepared to relearn everything you know a few times as human knowledge increases.

Also, after most of/all the people I care about die, I'd probably give up.
