Now that the API is live, we want to make you all aware that HTML datamining (via eu.battle.net/wow or any of the other regional wow sites) is not acceptable. Within the next 7 days, we will start to blacklist users that are making excessive requests to our regular community sites.
If you are currently in the process of porting over to the API and have not requested a key yet, please do so. We do not want to interrupt service for community sites that are following that path. Please email api-support@blizzard.com with specific questions/concerns, or reply to this thread with any general comments. Thank you for your cooperation :-) |

Hey Takralus,
Is it possible for the EU side to get their own forums like the US Website and Mobile Feedback (http://us.battle.net/wow/en/forum/#forum1025937) ? I was following the progress of the API in the US side but was unable to post my comments, findings and coding. Thanks, Ulmita |

How does this effect me?
Does this mean people with guild websites linking to the armory won't work anymore? |
|

Hi Takralus,
I'm using some plugins on my guildwebsite (guildsroster and guild recent activities). Will these be affected? They are getting the information every 30 minutes. If so, where can I request a API key? |

Documentation for the new API can be found on http://blizzard.github.com/api-wow-docs. I thought I would mention this since the link hasn't been posted by a CM anywhere on these forums. (Now that the API is live... - somewhere on the internet?)
And please, create a community API forum like they have on the US site. We have web developers in Europe too that would like to ask a question sometimes. Thank you. |

I have no idea what this is about.
Does it affect normal forum usage? |

I had already opened a thread about this but since replies were low and you now opened this thread yourself, I'll spill my guts here as well:
I am pretty fed up with the way the community API is being rolled out. First, Blizzard did not provide us with a testing environment to program against so we could develop new features or port old features before the API actually went live. Second, Blizzard did not finish the API yet, as personal and guild achievements still are not retrievable. Yet, thirdly, Blizzard disabled the old way of sc*%@*!* (Edit: come on, developers, s c r a p i n g is a valid English word, please go read http://thedailywtf.com/Articles/The-Clbuttic-Mistake-.aspx and stop embarassing yourself) data from the old Armory, breaking sites like my guild website that depended on fetching some member data that I cannot get through the API just yet, simply because a) we didn't get a grace period to smoothen the transiation and b) part of what I need is not available through the new API yet. Blizzard, you're being ridiculous. You would not roll out game patches this way. Then why are you forcing other developers to rush code into production which they had no time to test against either live or testing data? And why even disable the old interface when the new API still lacks features the old one had? I have no idea what this is about. No, if you do not know what this is about, it does not affect you directly. It would be a bit more clear if Blizzard would have dedicated an entire forum to the API like they did on the US forums, but I guess European developers are not important enough to cater to. |

We see that some people do have some queries about this announcement, and we'd just like to reiterate that if you do have questions or concerns, please email api-support@blizzard.com
Thanks everyone! Is it possible for the EU side to get their own forums like the US Website and Mobile Feedback (http://us.battle.net/wow/en/forum/#forum1025937) ?While it is unfortunate that you are unable to do this, we do not have any current plans to open similar forums in Europe. |

Even though I agree the focus has been too much on the US forums, a week's notice isn't exactly screaming "Take your time, guys", and the penalty of being blocked is pretty harsh, you really should be able to do this in time. If you set your code up well you're using functions to retrieve data from the old armory to start with, and all you have to do is replace those with new API functions, which should not take more than a few hours if you really take it easy and take a couple of breaks. If you didn't set your code up right, you can't really blame Blizzard, can you? |

That's... ridiculous and sad to hear. |
We see that some people do have some queries about this announcement, and we'd just like to reiterate that if you do have questions or concerns, please email api-support@blizzard.comFunny answer. You have the technology, why not make that particular forum shared by both the US and EU (I'm assuming you're worried about moderation issues or about splitting up your resources on 2 sub-fora. The API forum shouldn't have too much animo, so a merge would not flood it) 1) What was the reason again so segregate the EU from the US for matters like this? (fair and honest question, I forgot) 2) Why push this live, denounce the previous method while most using it haven't had a chance to test, AND it's simply not done yet. |
The forums are most likely designed so that they can only use/accept one source for battle.net authentication. |

I have no questions, just the pretty general comment that your company made a grave mistake. Do with that as you like, I'm not going to put even more effort into this than 1) posting my own thread and 2) reposting it in this thread when it was opened. Why do you blue posters always draw discussion away from the forums?
Making my point that Europe doesn't matter enough to Blizzard, thank you. I would have had some valuable input, but apparently my input is not appreciated and I simply refuse to email to some address when Blizzard's policy in respect to customer emails is to not reply to them anyway. It's like talking to a brick wall and bad service in general. Back ontopic: in my opinion the old interface needs to be brought back up for at least a month, maybe two. And secondly, during this month, no throttling or banning as announced in this thread should happen. We all need time to develop new software. I can't do it in a few days, not even in a week. I have a full time programming job already and I do not want to rush myself in the few free hours I get every day just because you force something down my throat. Yes, I am still very angry about this. |

Surely it would follow simple logic for things such as this, which aren't really related to any particular region, unlike other sections of the WoW forums, to be in a separate forum which is neither US or EU and simply a shared forum for such matters? I understand the reasons for separating certain part of the forums and I'm more than happy for that to happen, but this is just illogical and ridiculous. |
|
There in no need to start drama here guys. I am sure there is a good reason for this (most of the major websites that are farming data from armory are at us).
It would be nice though, to at least have a sticky somewhere for this purpose. |
That right there only builds on the foundation of the bad service you have. Some may say it's racist. |

My code was set up right, that's not the issue. What IS the issue is that I'm working on releasing a huge site at the office while also starting up a new site that is on a pretty tight deadline. I also have to provide SLA related services to older customers. I'm already making 10-11 hour working days, plus 2 hours of travel time. Forgive me if I don't rush home to start coding on a hobby site just because Blizzard fails to recognize that not all developers work on their sites full time. Most fan made sites are hobby projects and putting hobbyists on a schedule that I personally would not even force on full time developers is idiotic. |

Hey, I think that bliz as a company can't really make their schedules around ours if you know what i mean. The deadline announced actually it was discussed quite a while ago in the us - side development forums. The thing here is that if you didn't follow there you wouldn't know, and thus one of the reasons why i asked for our own place. From the other hand i understand your frustration if you have already a site that data mines and you didn't know about it as you will be left with a really tight schedule. On the bright side of things, people have already created various tools (under gpl) which are available for anyone to use, and could save you quite some time: Quoting from original post made by Cyaga for those who haven't seen it yet. (btw great job dude)
I hope this helps. Edit: Forgot to include the url for the original post above: <a href="http://us.battle.net/wow/en/forum/topic/2369882588">http://us.battle.net/wow/en/forum/topic/2369882588</a> |

I understand that EU CM's can't provide support for the community api, but what we want is a place where (web) developers can discuss things. If we create a topic in the general forum it gets buried in a matter of minutes without ever being read, let alone being answered. Create an API forum, place a sticky that no official support is provided and voila, we have a forum where we can help ourselves. Not that hard, is it? |
