[guide] Discipline healing in cataclysm
Excellent guide, could just possibly use a chapter/content list up top to make it easier for people to find what they want more quickly. :3 Painfully fixed due to the character number limit but was thinking of that myself and you just gave me the needed push. The whole thing didn't look so long on my word file, but the forum format makes it pretty scary. Note to self: next time I make such a text, I should try leave some extra space for editing. Also, thank you for the support! |
Excellent guide, could just possibly use a chapter/content list up top to make it easier for people to find what they want more quickly. :3 Best thing to do is to simply make sure your posts don't exceed 4800 in character size, that way you can always add adjustments later :) Just make sure you do not create awkward post splits (Like finishing a section 2 lines in a new post) (Is how I wrote mine) |

Would have been great if I could have found a character counter in the software I'm using for text editing. :( Just make sure you do not create awkward post splits (Like finishing a section 2 lines in a new post) Yes, that's what I tried to do and would like to preserve. I still want to add some numbers once I picked some correct ones from elitist jerks (without the excruciating math attached), and probably some formulas I looked for myself over the years. Also, some links to other priestly sites would be good. |
What are you using then? For posts like that I generally use Notepad++ or Kate/Gedit, For many people Notepad++ would be excellent :)
That would indeed be nice :) I've worked on in-depth stuff for priests before but I stopped doing that a while back (EJ's lived up to their names and made me stop contributing) Think all I got left that is as up to date as possible would be my own Theory-craft sheet. This might help a bit: http://greynet.nl/uploads/theorycraft.xlsx *PS: remove that spider from your head, it's fugly :) |
What are you using then? I'm using an software similar to the office pack (as in including text and database editors) but less expensive, as I dont need the massive functionality of microsoft office. And yays, it has a character counter, I just needed to discover it (gotta say I never needed before to count my characters in a text). Funny enough, the first post has a little over 4000, but I had to trim it to be able to post it, so there seems to be a divergence of opinions and I will not start counting the letters myself! That would indeed be nice :) That database looks like full of goodies and with your permission (and name attached) I will find a place for it in my post for those that can delve deeper in the mathematics realms. *PS: remove that spider from your head, it's fugly :) I did :(((. I just had my helm showing while running around in my tier 2, then switched to raiding gear (+srsface) and hided the abomination but the armory wont update. |

Ah yes, that one caught me off guard to, thing is: Windows uses CR;LF to define an enter hit (New Line, Line Feed), This means that although it looks like hitting the enter key only does one thing, it in fact does two. And sadly the forum also looks at it as two separate events rather then one. That and from what I could see it also uses BB tags as a length definer, so adding a oblique to a word instantly adds 7 characters in length to your post :'( As for the office part, libre office (Open office) ftw :) Also: 4957 characters in length that first post of yours ;)
Go right ahead. (Some pages are 'locked' but just go review->unprotect sheet, there is no password)
Silly armory, y won't you update! |

Fantastic guide. Really.
Ive been holy for as long as i have played my priest (since end of wrath) and only used disc for pvp but during our last few raids i have been using my disc (pvp) spec and really enjoyed it. I struggled with group healing but single target and a touch of shield spam has been quite lovely. Your guide is well timed, ive been thinking on fixing my disc spec for pve and this has helped me decide to go for it (with all the regemming/reforging associated). Thanks. Lots. |

Great guide. I will add something about the choice of secondary stats, having juggled a lot between the 2.
Haste will result in faster casts. Faster casts will provide more hps, however they will also drain mana quicker. Another downside of haste is that it affects PWS too little, by the only mean of lowering its general cooldown (in cataclysm the amounts of haste for capping GCD are very high). In conclusion, haste will only affect about 30-40% of your healing directly and another 30% indirectly (by more aegis procs). This paragraph is a bit awkwardly phrased. Haste does not affect PWS indeed, but then again neither does Mastery affect FH or GH. From this wording, one might wrongly assume that you are devaluing Haste. Haste and Mastery are two similar stats in that they provide output. Haste will provide more output than Mastery in most situations (especially raid heal), but will drain your mana faster. Although personal preference is the key for healers in their gearing choices, I would advise Priests still struggling with mana in raids to favour Mastery, while Priests who feel secure with their mana should start looking for more Haste (indeed, I have started to reforge Spirit into Haste). Haste will give you more output, provided your mana can take it, and it brings the extra advantage of making your mobility easier, which is very handy for a fight like Ragnaros heroic or Beth'Tilac if you are soaking. PS: Sticky requested. |

@Qaba - I will try rewording the passage to be more clear, as I don't disagree with what you are saying, and its pretty much what I meant.
One thing I would add is that idd mastery alone will not affect Flash heal/Gheal/Heal directly, but it will do indirectly, via aegis, when you consider it in conjunction with crit - which comes once from gear and once from talents, and given the fact that we can get 10% crit from renewed hope exactly by casting those spells - via grace and 25% crit on a cast from Inner Focus (and some extra from the intellect specc bonus), we do get pretty lots of "free crit rating". This free crit rating we get makes mastery bring a bonus pretty much regardless of us ignoring crit from gear, but there is a balance somewhere when casting more heals per encounter will wield more aegis amounts than just having them passively buffed by mastery. I do agree with you that mastery is more of a safety thing while haste gives us more control over burst damage - if I can word it like that, however, haste comes with a mana cost. |

Clarified the wording in stats priority. Hopefully next week I'll have more free time (got a deadline on monday) and will finish up some details.

Added Baleroc HC notes.

"Sticky Requested"
great job dude. Anyways, i hope you can help me abit. I've been having a little dilemma lately. As you mentioned the stats of a Disc Priests is very variable, even tho Mastery came strongest and Haste just behind. But if you take my position now. I'm a overall healer. I heal whatever i can, never heals either tank or either raid. What do you think my focus on stats should be? Ive tryed to have Mastery/Crit up there, with Haste just behind. All can help if they want:) I really need abit of help. |

Very nice guide, sticky requested ofc.
One question reguarding Necromantic Focus that I see you using. Do you feel that it is a better throughput trinket for Disc than the Eye of Blazing Power? (Hc for both) I took one look at it on your profile and kicked myself for not thinking of it, Shadow Word: Pain every 20s and you have a free 440 Mastery. |

Baleroc HC - I was on the second crystal wave with no full torment soaker, so my stacks built a little slower; It is possible to get few stacks during tank healing if you watch your vital flame timer and can appreciate your tank will be fine; on the crystal healing, I started with shield/greater heal/penance then power infusion flash heal and it worked pretty decent. Fiend should be used early to have it up a second time since the flash heal spam can be pretty expensive. If you have the PWS glyoh, it will count as a direct heal. Penance ticks only give 1 stack of sparks, so its good to use on small number of stacks, after that, its not worth it. if the first crystal is a full soaker you should help out there, like let the other healer heal it at the start then at 10 stacks give your tank a pws let him use a cd and pop PI then spam the !@#$ out of the soaker and there you go 75+ stacks use your fiend and hoh and be ready to do the 2nd crystal in a more mana saving way while the other healer does the tank. ps. very nice guide |
