Maybe its Venus or Mars? I believe those two planets may look like large stars at times.

Just looked outside and its full moon. Some basic geometry shows that venus (Beeing closer to the sun then earth) cannot be near a full moon. So its either Mars or Jupiter. |

If you have a smartphone there is an app that can tell you what it is.

I can't really see it right now I'm afraid. I am in South Africa and there are clouds where I am. ;) |

Hmm... clouds are clear now. I'd say it must be Jupiter? I think the colour of Mars is slightly dull in comparison.

Nah, no way a asteroid is that bright. Also, that asteroid is millions of miles away from us by now. According to internets its Jupiter: http://earthsky.org/tonight/bright-object-near-moon-on-november-7-is-jupiter |
Nah, no way a asteroid is that bright. Also, that asteroid is millions of miles away from us by now. Fair enough :) It's very rare we get a clear night here, let alone when there's something different to look at up there. |

Perhaps its the Russian mars probe gone wrong..should be on its way to mars by now but they are having problems.

Might be jupiter.

I'll try to get a pic through my uber 120€ worth telescope and post it here ;) |

If you ever see a very bright object in the sky, looking like a star it is one of our fellow planets. Most likely Venus, Jupiter, Saturn or mars. Go check the sky in a month or 2, you'll see Saturn rather easy.

Jupiter at night and Venus in early winter mornings are the two brightest objects (Save the moon) in the sky, and stand out fairly easily even in light polluted areas. Even though Venus is brighter, you are more likely to see Jupiter since the outer planets rise higher above the horizon and are the outer planets are around for longer than the inner planets in a typical day.
Saturn is the next easiest to spot, though it is difficult to distinguish from a star with the naked eye, a telescope will show the rings. |
