Okay so Blizzard Activision uses this bill. RIGHT! How many references to pop culture in THIS game could be classed as "copyright infringement" under this bill. Because this bill could shut down ANYTHING using other people's material. For a matter of urgency I copied the list of references here:

A FULL list for references can be found at: http://www.wowpedia.org/List_of_pop_culture_references_in_Warcraft If it ever were true that Blizzard supported this bill the game we play would be a hot bed of the game being shut down because of the way SOPA is worded: "To promote prosperity, creativity, entrepreneurship, and innovation by combating the theft of U.S. property, and for other purposes." —H.R. 3261 Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stop_Online_Piracy_Act The big question that would be asked of the company if the suggestion it supports this bill is WHY it uses all the pop culture references in the game while supporting something to "combat the theft of US property". If you do listen to all of TotalBiscuit's commentary about this he's right in one way. It DOES affects us if this goes through even if Blizzard is not supporting it. It means such sites as wowpedia could be shut down down because they use intellectual property (text and pictures from this game), people could be banned from Youtube for making videos based on this game, no more fan-based blogs (all infringement under this bill). From above referenced webpage: "The bill would allow the U.S. Department of Justice, as well as copyright holders, to seek court orders against websites accused of enabling or facilitating copyright infringement." The US Department of Justice can just say that your video you made by capturing footage from this game was a violation and therefore order Youtube to remove your item and ban you and what next? You getting deported to the USA for this action and put in prison there even if you're not a US citizen. Not sure how many of you know the movie 1984. If you can get it somehow, just watch it for the message it portrays. Simply put this movie is all about what knowledge you can and cannot know, what stuff you can and cannot read, and who you can or cannot talk with. Well, very simply put. But I see some disturbing similarity to how "media" is portrayed in this movie and how "media" is going to be controlled via this and similar bills. And this bill effects us all even if you're not in the USA. Youtube IS based in the USA for example. I run a business doing designing in real life and this bill worries me. I got a video on Youtube as a visual catalogue of my designs and what would happen if the US Department of Justice decides to question if I really designed the designs I did. Would I, as a designer, be facing a lengthy court battle then? Both for users of the internet and content producers this bill is BAD! I am sure that the idea is good as they seem to want to stop piracy of intellectual property. But then when you step onto the realm of creative freedom you do overstep the marks. As my list at the top shows, BLIZZARD ITSELF is doing creative freedom. As a designer myself I do creative freedom. Every blogger and machinima producer is doing creative freedom. THAT is why we with 10 million voices should OPPOSE this bill and tell Blizzard THAT is what we demand!!!!! |

They completely refuse to help the EU zone with the financial crisis, which I might add, was caused by them. Typical American stupidity, if the Euro fails, the next thing to fall into a million pieces shall be the American economy. |

Will never pass.....all of the 'pop culture' references used in the game and others are effectively advertising the movie, song etc. You yourself in your lengthy mail mentioned a number of movies that i myself thought, oh yeah might go and watch that again...This so called bill has been thrown around since 2004, and will never be passed.
