I won't say who has contributed the 'most' to science in our society because it's all a huge group effort, without one man's theorem another man's could not develop.

As a prospective computer science student I'll say that my vote goes for Dennis Ritchie.

Definitely newton. He's the single man who has contributed the most. He figured out the theory and equations for gravity, created calculus, the three laws of motion, applied gravity and his laws to the planets in the solar system, made discoveries in the field of optics, etc.

There's no doubt about it. Isaac Newton the man.

I can only assume that someone naming him is trolling. He might have had an eye for design (if you like that thing) and for certain was really good at image making and PR. But he did pretty much nothing for actual science.

Skimming through the thread ...

Well, Newton was important for his time, Einstein was and still is fundamental for nearly all modern physics. Without his work we wouldn't have had astrophysics, quantum mechanics and quantum field theory. But Einstein also extended Newton's work. But Newton extended Kepler's work on astronomy. Feynman and others extended quantum mechanics into quantum field theory. Darwin too was a great scientist in biology. This is not all about physics even though physics is way cooler :P

Point is, none of these people started from scratch, but they all made physics take a leap forward. Putting them up against each other is a bit silly.

I'd say the greatest genius ever to have lived was Leonardo Da Vinci and the largest contributor was Aristotle as it was his philosophies that laid the basis for western civilisation he covered everything from the scientific method to ethics to politics to biology to poetry.

The Neanderthaler who invented fire.

Edit: im not joking. ok wel maybee i am.

But the way i see it. Without invention our own fire we still would have lived in caves. And Einstein and such smart sientists would have never discovered or invented all these smart things.

The dominant human dumb male would have still ruled over his cave and kicked all the smart not so strong humans out.
