Overclocking PC, need some info please
|
Hi guys,
pretty much as the title says I'd like to over clock my PC slightly, not a massive amount seeing as I have a stock cooling system and not an amazing rig but it's decent enough for what I want it to achieve. I'm just interested in overclocking as I can push my PC that little bit further. Although, I have NO idea how to go about doing this, Do I do it in the BIOS, do I do it with a programme etc. Any info is helpful, hopefully this is the right section of the forums as well! Thanks in advance Newcon |

I run a 2500k at 4.9 GHz yo.
103 MHz * 48 at 1.37 v. That's pretty good, I don't know of anyone higher. The cooler i use is the Noctua NH-D14 beast. But to the question... you have to enter BIOS and increase the bus speed and/or multiplier slightly repeatedly. To do that you probly have to set the overclock mode in "manual", or something along those lines, first. After each increase you reboot the computer and run a CPU stress test program, like Prime95, for 15-20 min. If the computer hasn't crashed you can proceed to increase multiplier or bus speed. Do so until the computer starts crashing under stress than revert to the last working settings, and then let the CPU stress test run for a couple of hours. You'll want to find a good combination of bus speed and multiplier. For my CPU the bus was only up from 100 to 103 MHz, but the multiplier was significantly raised, from 33 to 48. BTW don't listen to the above guy, he's clueless. Overclocking is completely safe as long as you don't mess with the voltage, like I do. Even if you do there are basic safety features that that will turn the computer off when in danger, but I would still absolutely not recommend changing the voltage to new clockers until you're really confident about what you're doing. The reason we increase the voltage is to make the CPU stable at higher multipliers and bus speeds, but doing so significantly increases the heat production. |

I can overclock my CPU from the desktop. Some PCs come with this application, so if you have it you can use it. - more here: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/overclocking-software,2059-4.html

verclocking is completely safe as long as you don't mess with the voltage, like I do. If you've set it to auto chances are that the motherboard will overcompensate in voltage if you start overclocking. Telling people to "Overclock as long as they dont mess with the voltage" is counter-productive. If you start messing around in your BIOS I suggest you look up some kind of stress tester to see how your rig handles the increase in FSB and/or Voltage. I can recommend Prime95 for this purpose. Let your system run the stress tester for a number of hours(I sugggest about half a day) to see if you're good in the long run once you've settled on what you feel is your "limit". |
