Holy Paladin PvP guide by Mirion

Hello, i'm a Holy Paladin with pretty high PvP experience in both RBGs and arenas from the server Outland, this is a guide for 4.3 Holy Paladin play.
This is a guide that will cover pretty much all you need to get started in arenas. That stat prio for me is, Intellect - Spirit - Crit - Mastery, you can go with either crit or spirit but I prefer spirit. Glyphing Prime glyphs would be Word of Glory, Seal of Insight and Holy Shock there's not really any other options, they're the best as you're going to use Holy Shock on CD, Word of Glory is your main heal and Seal of Insight should always be up. Major Glyphs There's around 5 Major Glyphs that are even worht mentioning, they're. Hammer of Justice(if you're running HoJ spec this is rocksolid I love this, Cleanse, Turn Evil, Beacon of Light and Divine Plea. As we don't really struggle with mana Plea is out of the question for me, Cleanse is a must for me, Turn Evil is a must(fearing Lock pets / gargoyles / Ghouls) Beacon of Light, this glyph is quite pointless as we never struggle with mana. I run with HoJ, Cleanse & Turn Evil, you can play with all of them but these are what I like & prefer. Gems Here it comes down to what you prefer. Myself I use Burning Shadowspirit Diamon 54 Intellect & 3 increased critical effect, for Metas you have sevral viable options, there's people using Destructive Shadowspirit Diamond aswell for the RNG reflect and the reduce Silience effect wich I can't remmeber the name of. Red gems should always be used for 50 Intellect as it's our main stat. Yellow gems, Potent Lava Coral or Willful Lava Coral are the most common once, you can use whatever you want. I feel that I get enough support from my teammates to not need the extra resiliance so I go for Crit. Haste is not really an option as the values are not high enough to make it worth it. Blue gems, Purified Shadow Spinel, no question here it's the gem you'll fill all blue slots with, spirit being one of our main stats together with Intellect. Enchants, for head & shoulders the PvP once are obivous. Chest: Either Peerless Stats(20+ all stats) or Mighty Resiliance(40 Resiliance), it's up to you I haven't changed my chest yet as i'm a slacker. Cloak: Greater Intellect, no other worthy option, it's the best simply =P Wrists: Mighty Intellect, if you don't have enough gold you can use theCritical Strike one. Weapon: Power torrent or Heartsong if you can't afford PT. Shield: Superior Intellect, nothing else to use really. Gloves: This one is kinda tricky, no good enchant to use, but i'd rater Haste over Mastery, i'm using 50 Haste atleast. Legs: Powerful Ghostly Spellthread or Powerful Enchanted Spellthread, whatever you prefer, if you lack mana regen Powerful Enchanted Spellthread. Boots: As we don't need Mastery nor do we like Haste, Earthen Vitality as we're not speccing into Pursuit of Justice(will go over that later). Rings if you have enchanting is 40 Intellect ofcourse. Builds, there's alot of them you can use and it's very comp dependent. http://www.wowhead.com/talent#sMIbzrkuufohbMZc This is a HoJ build, i'd reccomend this for 2s and 3vs3 if your team doesn't have a controlled stun on a Short CD(aka Kidney Shot, Cheap Shot etc). Perks of this is the extra control you gain, you can assists with the CC easly, peel for your teammates if they need to get away. http://www.wowhead.com/talent#scIbzrkuufohbZco: Cookiecutter spec, longer range on Judgemen then the HoJ spec, nothing special about this spec, to be honest I don't see why people play with it as you dont really bring anything to the team, I guess it works if you're playing a comp like Junglecleave were you don't need to CC. http://www.wowhead.com/talent#sMIbdrkukfohbMZc Denounce spec & Imp HoJ, this is a really offensive spec, usaly it's better for 2s if you're playing with a DK that needs the HoJ and you can assist quite good with Denounce. I rather run with Imp HoJ only as Denounce isn't something I quite like as you risk getting locked out due to Exorcism being Holy school. Reasoning for not taking Pursuit of Justice is that it shares ICD with Blessed Life making it close to useless :) Gearing Spirit offsets ofcourse, Mana is evrything for a healer we don't need Hit rating nor Spell penetration so we don't have anything to worry about, don't buy Haste offeset they're terrible & ofcourse a PvP trinket, insignia or the Human racial "Evry man for himself". |

Reforging
This is completly up to you, but i'm going to explain why I reforged as I did and what the perks are. http://eu.battle.net/wow/en/character/outland/M%C3%ADrion/simple Here's my main Paladin(I have 2) and as you can see I haven't reforged the crit away nor the spirit, this reasoning for this is they're both keystats for us. Haste & Masteyr are the only stats that i've reforged as it's worthless and that small amount we can get of both stats are way to small to actually add up. I reforged these two to Spirit currently as the game I play in 3vs3 right now(Mage Lock Paladin) the games can drag on quite long and I need the extra Spirit, if I was going to play a Meleecleave like Paladin / warrior / DK I would probaly be gemming for full Crit, reforge evrything to crit as the games wont be long and I need to get those instant casts out. If I would get locked on Holy School in a meleecleave that would probaly be game over as you can't go defensive. However as a caster cleave my two casters can help eachother out so good with the amount of CC we have so it doesn't really matter as much. Basicly, if you're playing a rushdown comp like meleecleaves, I would change my gems and reforge to crit. Castercleave, Spirit as the games can drag on for quite a while. Addons Ok, there's some addons you'll need as a Healer. Interruptbar - http://www.wowinterface.com/downloads/info19043-InterruptBarUpdatedModified.html What it does is it shows the CD of the enemy interrupts you can configure it with /ib and change the scale with /IB Scale 1.5 etc, tip would be to hide it with /IB hide then it will only pop up whenever a interrupt is used. Spellalerter - http://www.wowinterface.com/downloads/info19715-Spellalerter4.1.html You can configure it via /SA noneed though unless you want to change where it shows, basicly the addon shows what CC is being casted and on to who, it's not 100% correct as there's focus macros, arena123 macros etc. OmniCC - http://www.wowinterface.com/downloads/info4836-OmniCC.html Puts numbers on your spells & buffs / debuffs. LoseControl - http://www.wowinterface.com/downloads/info11642-LoseControl.html This is a really great addon it puts a icon ontop of Party numbers and yourself whenever you get CC'd so you can more easly see the duration of the stuns, siliences etc, works together with OmniCC, strongly reccomended if you're getting started. These are all the addons i'm using they're all working fine even though some of them might be out of date. Macros Ok to the fun stuff, I use quite alot of macros. First off is targeting macros, instead of clicking your party frames you should use these, you're going to become a better healer, better at line of sighting CC as you're not looking at your party frames. Do this for all your arena partners and put them on a handy key I have my scroll for targeting(Scroll up and down). #showtooltip Arcane Torrent /target nameofparty member Dispel macros I use the same keybind for dispelling my arena partners but together with a Shift modifer so I'm using Shift Scroll up / down for dispelling, you should have a macro to dispel yourself aswell. /cast [@partymember] Cleanse Divine Protection Simple macro to use Healthstone aswell as our mini Shieldwall, I shoulden't have this macro as you tend to use the DP for teh sprint and not defensive, so if i'm not topped it's going to use the HS :p #showtooltip /cast Divine Protection /use Healthstone Kings & Might To rebuff in combat, since they changed the way our blessings work in Cata the easiest way is to buff yourself and you'll all be buffed. /Cast [@Mírion] Blessing of Kings /cast [@Mírion] Blessing of Might Hammer of Justice Simple Focus Hammer macro. #showtooltip Hammer of Justice /cast [target=focus] Hammer of Justice Focus Judgement As it says, focus Judgement so I don't have to drop target to keep Judgement of the Pure up. /cast [@Focus] Judgement /targetlasttarget Blessing of Protection Yep, I use 2 of these macros aswell as normal keybind to bop, you don't have to but it comes in handy to BoP blinds etc. #showtooltip /cast [target=NAMEOFPARTYMEMBER] Hand of Protection Freedom I use 3 of these macros aswell, what I do to keep them all in my head is put them on a keybind that I can remmeber, freedom for example is CTRL - 123. #showtoltip /cast [@NAMEOFPARTYMEMBER] Hand of Freedom Holy Shock Holy Shock macro for myself, just somethign I'm still using after 4 years. #showtooltip Holy Shock /cast [@Mírion] Holy Shock Rebuke Simple focus rebuke, can come in handy if you're standing next to a Mage that just blinked in to sheep you. /cast [@Focus] Rebuke Turn Evil Last one now promise, mouseover TE to fear pets. /cast [target=mouseover] Turn Evil |

General gametips
- If you're ever blanketed you can use Judgement to gain a small heal. - You should be using Crusader Strike to gain a Holy Power if you're blanketed / locked on cast to get a quick WoG after. - If you see a Hunter moving towards you you should use Hand of Sacrifice to possibly break the Scatter Trap, this is quite easy to predict once you learn it. - Against Mages if you can't find a global to dispel a Cone of Cold you can use Hand of Freedom to break it and judt replace the Freedom with a Hand of Salvation so the Mage doesn't gain the benefit of it. - Blessing of Protection can be used both offensivly and defensivly, it can for example break blinds. - If you're being trained by a Rogue and need to get away you should use Hand of Freedom the last second of the stun so you can quickly use Divine Protection to gain distance. - You can fear the Warlock pets to prevent counterspells being casted on you. - If the Warlock pet is on fear DR you can Holy Wrath it to stun it, wich also preventes counterspells. - DK pets can all be feared, preferable you should fear the DK pet once it's been transformed as it will do alot of damage. - You can BoP yourself out of blinds aswell as others. - If you ever have spareglobals and you're playing with casters, dispel posions, diseases aswell it does make a huge diffrence. - Rather use plea early at 80% then at 10%, preferable when you're mostly spamming cleanses and don't have to heal. - You can cover up Divine Plea with stuff like Hand of Salvation. - Don't forget to rebuff in combat as it does make a diffrence. - Freedom & sprint is huge when you're being trained and need to get away to get some quick casts off, especially when you have classes with melee classes on your back. - Always try and keep a resonable distance to a pillar, you should always have a way to avoid CC either by outranging it or Line of Sighting it. Communucation - NEVER ever blame a loss on the team, ask them what happend and went wrong and what to do better next game. - ALWAYS call out exactly what you're doing, litterly evry global should be called out, you should call out if you're using a Sacrifice, freedom, bop, divine protection. - If you lose a game, don't queue up before you've talked through what you're going to do diffrent next game, if you don't you'll probaly lose the next game eitherway. - As a healer it's very important to know what your DPSers are calling out so you need to listen carfully, you need to know whenever a Rogue is stunned, so he can't kick for example. If this is not work for your team you will not get far, you need to be able to trust your DPS to do what they say they're doing.I'm uploading high rated Holy Paladin play quite often on my youtube channel. http://www.youtube.com/user/mirionx You can also find some videos i've made recently there to prehaps pick up some tips and how to improve yourself, i'm not playing perfect in those games but it's good to watch if you're just getting started. I might write a RBG section if you want it, how to gear for it what your main role would be etc. If you like this guide please vote it sticky so more people can see it, if i've forgotten anything just post it and i'll edit it in. RBGs Glyphs Word of Glory Divine Favor, mid fights can last quite abit and this glyph helps alot with output, change to Holy Shock if you want, I just like this one. Holy Shock Turn Evil Cleanse Divine Plea Gemming Red gems should always be used for 50 Intellect as it's our main stat. Orange once 25 intellect 25 Critical strike Rating. Purple one 25 intellect and 25 Spirit. Enchants Same as above. Spec http://www.wowhead.com/talent#scIbzrkuufohbZco Reforging You reforge evrything to Spirit. That's kinda all for RBGs, it's all about outlasting and you as a Holy Paladin is supposed to do the bigheals and you're the mainhealer in the group. You should 95% of the times tophealing by quite abit. General stuff you'll be doing. Escorting flag carrier, freedom him and spamm cleanse, it's important he gets across to your team without losing the flag, that's going to be your job. Dispel CC from the other healers, this one is crucial if you don't do this you'll not get very far. Use the buffs that are availible in the BGs, the leaf in the huts area great, instead of running to drink you can just take the leaf and spend less time out of combat. Try to stay very far back from the battle, if you're fighting in the middle and you get gripped in, freedom and sprint out of there. If anyone in your team gets gripped in you should freedom him so he can get out of there without you losing anyone in your team, it's all a numbers game and not so much skillbased. Don't be afraid to use CDs, rather use BoP to save a healer then not use it, you might lose a flag becuse you thought "No I don't want to use this I might need it later". LoH is kinda iffy, you want to save it for the FC but you might be dead, I use it depending on the situation, if we're under heavy pressure I save it, but if we're having a laugh and are dominating the BG I use it on a DPS / healer. Hand of Sacrifice, this is a great ability to use in RBGs, you can use it like in arenas to avoid CC or on the tank to stop some damage. Beacon of Light, this should go on yourself if you're against a DoT cleave. Change according to the situation, if they're going on the FC change it to him. Setups As for RBGs you should preferable run a DoT cleave with Boomkin, Warlocks, Fire Mages, Shadow Priest, Rogue, Frost DK, 2 Holy Pallys, 1 Disc Priest, 1 Prot Warrior. But well, anything works the healers should preferable be untouched, you can switch out the Fire mage for a Elemental Shaman for Tremor. AND FOR CRYING OUT LOUD IF YOU'RE DOING RBGS TALK TO THE TEAM, WHEN DO YOU RESS, WHAT CDS HAVE YOU USED, ARE YOU CC'D, THERE IS NOTHING WORSE THEN A HEALER THAT DOENS'T TALK |

Thanks for the guide, also subbed to your channel.
Just a little noob question, I dont get how the mouseover thingie works. |
Thanks for the guide, also subbed to your channel. Mouseover is when you just hover your mouse over the thing you want, in this case the Pet and then click your keybind. |
|
Nice guide and very nice vids too.
One question though, what do I take as my 2nd trinket, aside from the PvP one? I'm really torn between the Battlemaster ones and the on use Spell Power one. If I take the spirit Battlemaster I lose a hefty amount of resilience so would like an opinion on which is best when. |

|
Noob question but does turn evil work against DKs that are under Lichborne effect? It does work. |
Nice guide and very nice vids too. Kinda depends on what comp you run, in meleecleaves people will go on your DK and in other comps RMPS / RLS will want to switch to you. |
|

Brilliant guide mirion, i watched you vid on WCM and noticed you play shatterplay. Could you enlighten me on your strat vs RLS please :D

Well, bascily it's a hardcounter but what you do is evry single Deep CD you have your goal is to go Shaman. AoE fear the DPS at the same time you deep shaman to prevent Tremor, you as the Paladin should aim to HoJ the DPs that trinkets(generally the Warlock is the better option as he'll just Howl of Terror and your fuked). Fear Lock pet evrtime you deep for no CS, usaly you'll lose but this is the best way we found, go Rogue otherwise put all CS's on Lock. Also if this thread gets a bit more attention(via sticky or just generally voted up) I migh goahead and give some general tips aswell. I will answer all the question that are relevant aswell. |

I've had some 20 minute long games against comps like LSD2, I need the regen, the crit however I don't need as i'm playing with two casters that can peel for eachother very easy.
Please bear in mind that the game isn't as zergy on higher ratings as lower, it's alot slower phased. |
