Suggestion: Bring the Nights!
|
I don't know why, but somehow the prospect of seeing the world dim, nightly, only light by torches or something of the sort attracts me. I would really like to see Azeroths skies dim and get lit by the moonlight as well as the ground getting covered in darkness, not just look fully lit as it is in broad daylight. This could, of crouse, be just fully aesthetic, with no changes to game mechanics or aviable dailies or smth like during the night, just that everythings dimmer and lit by torches and stuff. And, of course, it could bring entirely new mechanics into the world, like lower detection for rogues, mobs that only spawn during night time, nocturnal mobs that are required for dailies and such, up to the devs, if they ever decide to implement something like this. All I know is that I want nights in my World of Warcraft to actually look like nights, not just a brand new skybox spanked onto the daylight one and nothing else changing.
Of course, it is the development teams choice to look into something like this, as well as the playerbase choice if they want something like this. The prime example being duskwood as it is the PERFECT look for the night, nuff said. Anyways, cheers, express your opinion down below and will see you in MOP, hopefully. |

I like this idea. They could also implant a system that makes the day cycle shorter to instead 3-4 hours per "day" 2 hours night & 2 hours day. So players who can't play in the evening still have a shot at seeing those mobs & doing the dailies. But yes, I would really enjoy more darker atmospheres.

I think, I like this idea very much. I doubt whether the WoW day/night cycle must be 3 or 4 times faster than the IRL cycle.
Besides this, I also want more weather effects. Rain, snow. The weather effects seem to be forgotten in Cataclysm, but I remember an instance in which defeating the 2nd last boss causes heavy rain and storm which will end when the instance's end boss has been slain. |
|
So, the way I see it, this idea is getting welcomed quite well. This is, in fact, my fourth try at getting Blizzards attention to this. I know that there was a day/night cycle at some point in Vanilla, but not afterwards. I also have the feeling that the current lighting engine could handle something like that, it just needs a mobile, not a stationary light source added and bam. Suddenly, dynamic shadows o.O

If I can turn it off/it hardly makes a difference/only affects some zones (not BGs/instances mainly), fine.
But I don't want to be struggling to see wtf is happening on my screen at night, and getting killed by rogues because I now have no chance at seeing them. |

An option to toggle it on and off would be nice too, it would implement the mood much better.

Here's a few examples of how nights used to look back before BC. Iirc they were even darker for a brief period.

The code is already in the game, or at least in previous builds. Putting it back in wouldn't take much effort and I'm positive it would pay off. Having the world feel like a world instead of a pastel background to the dungeon queue would be a GOOD thing! If I can turn it off/it hardly makes a difference/only affects some zones (not BGs/instances mainly), fine. You're not supposed to have a chance to see them, I thought that was the whole point with them hiding in shadows... Those are the arguments that saw night darkness removed in the first place. However, the problem would not be a problem if they utilised light sources, meaning you'd have to use spells, torches, flares, off-hands or enchant glows to light your way. They could use darkness for encounter design, and I'd certainly find PvP more interesting, not less. Some races could/should even have nightvision as a racial. |

I talked about this with my friends a few days ago, I think the nights in wow are too bright, so here are a couple of ideas that blizzard could use to make the nights more awesome:
Make it a lot darker. Update moon and also give us the second moon back in the sky update stars also make NPC's react to night, like taking up torches, lanterns, some go inside and stuff like that Could shorten the view distance just a little at night, like make it kinda fade out but you could see light from other places in the fog (this should not be used in BG's though) I'm not talking about making it so dark that you have to struggle to find something, just make it more awesome and enjoyable :) It's the little things that matter |

Play during and when it's midnight on your server.
Problem solved. |

Thats a brilliant idea ! But I wouldnt wish to have shorter cycles than the normal days. I think it must be suitable to the reality. 07:30-19:30 day, 19:30-07:30 night.
I would like to have also the moon cycles. like we will have full moon, new moon etc. you can also enable some lanterns for players to carry so that they can make the distance more visible and bright in the night |
|
Actually, off-hand lanterns and such actually cast light and were useful in the early days of the game. Also, there is little reason to have the day/night cycle differ from the outside world. It follows the RL patterns already, only the variation in lighting is so small that you won't even notice that it is dawn, dusk, midnight or so on.
Give us proper, really dark nights and have the lighting interact with really dense weather effects, so that a rainy autumn night in Duskwood would be pitch black, while a cloudless night could be about as bright as the nights are now. Give it a slider so people could turn the effect down if they want. I would also like to see lunar cycles. Having a full moon every night gets a bit old. Plus I miss the second moon... |

Wasn't this actually in the beta for vanilla WoW? Places like duskwood required a torch of lantern in your offhand to light your way? I couldve sworn that was one of the scrapped 'adventurer/dungeoneering' ideas they decided against. I thought it was the reason off hand lanterns were created in the first place.
Personally i would love to see some particular old world zones get some of their original 'darker' flavour back. duskwood and tirisfal used to be quite creepy, but with the brighter tone at night they've gone from sinister to merely drab. |
Play during and when it's midnight on your server. Dude, take a look at how the ground looks like during night-time in wow and comepare it to the one during day. Identical, no? Kinda breaks the immersion |

Changing the floor lighting by node (torches) would be pretty difficult, as you'd have to put in a system to decide how each and every tile is lit up, by multiple moving light sources, that could get intensive.
night time mobs are around though and have been since vanilla, my favourite example were the humans next to shadowfang keep, people by day.. but worgen by night.. I 'd love to see some more stuff like that though! |

That night mode in End of Time at Emerald Dragonshrine is something that should be implemanted in caves and some forests.
And yes! Agree with the topic 100% |

What about random water pools after rain?
Screen "freezing" in snowstorm areas ? (and many other effects like that depending on the weater effect actually going on or the environment) How many times you've entered in Blackrock mountain and wondered why there wasn't an "hot air" effect? Wind ? Am I the only one that think it's strange that in elwin forest there's not a single leaf moving ? |

Very cool ideas!
Unfortunately, World of Warcraft lacks night and weather effects. I would love to see some snow, or a blizzard which decreases your view distance and decreases your movement speed if it comes from front. Also wind... I really want to see wind. Tree leaves, even a single one, don't move in World of Warcraft. All you can do is hearing some wind sounds. The mobs in darkness with a torch or lantern is an awesome idea. Also, I very much liked the idea of seeing your way in darkness with a torch, or a lantern. That would be awesome, in my opinion. Of course this doesn't include everywhere, but for example in Duskwood, Deadwind Pass, or other areas which doesn't have a city or a village, hub etc. near them. Arctica, don't let this thread die. :) Sticky requested. |
