Ive collected most the ingredients for an item made by a leatherworker.
Im LW but i dont have the pattern. If i find someone in trade who can make it, i dont feel comfortable giving very expensive items to someone who could steal them, so how can i make it happen? |

Make sure that you make your agreement with the crafter through in-game (written) chat. What needs to be included is the item you want crafted, the fact that you will provide materials, and either the fee required or the fact that there won't be a fee. Also make sure the crafter actually agrees to these rules as well. This won't make them physically unable to run off with your mats, but you'll be covered by the scam policy and able to request a GM sort it out and give you back the mats.

One of the easiest methods is to have them trade you an equivalent amount of gold or an item of equal worth.
So you trade them 12k worth of mats (for example) for 12k gold/item then you trade that 12k gold/item for the finished product, if you back out they can sell the mats, if they back out you can rebuy the mats with the 12k/sell the item. So no one loses anything. |

Yea, but extremely few crafters will actually agree to this, as it can be an easy way for you to "dump" the items and run off with gold instead :P

One of the few ways to at least lower the chances of being scammed out of mats etc is to simply make sure the person belongs in a reputable or highend guild. Few guilds worth their salt will have their reputation tarnished by scammers.

Have to admit I tend to do that too ... though it's not very fair on people like me who wouldn't dream of scamming anyone but don't want to belong to a 'big' guild.

That will only get them kicked out of the guild afterwards, but not help you. But as has aleady been said: the anti-scam policy is a good protection. Because then, it's not just a matter of being kicked out of a guild, but a documented case of violating the TOS. |

If possible always try to aquire crafting from one of the more respected or established guilds. No decent guild wants bad rep with people stealing items and thus you will find that it is very unlikely you will get scammed by a member from such a guild.
Our guild for example is one of the longest running guilds in wow, joining is via application and we are very choosy on who we let in, that is generally the case with most established guilds and I would think "the player will get kicked from guild he he/she steals items" does not really apply because those players generally don't get into such guilds, i've not seen it happen on my own server with a well established guild in the 4 years or so that I have been playing. Its still worth setting out some clear agreement in your pre-crafting chat with the person, a GM can read back your conversation with that person. |
