Topic Launcher issues since 'optimization'

approximately 4-5 days ago i ran wow for the first time in a few of weeks, knowing there was a patch i left it to run for a while, went and made coffee and the like..

when i got back the optimization screen was still up, and was about 40-50% of the way through. so i left it to run, and did other stuff, when it finished that stage it began the patch, downloaded it without error, then said 'applying updates 0%' at the bottom.

yay, thinks me, wow soon.
this is where things become interesting.

after freezing up for some time at 0% the launcher tells me that it cannot apply the patch and i should run repair.
then, when i run repair it tells me it cannot fix the problem, and i should reinstall.

now these issues i can understand, as i was using a 3g connection (vodafone broadband dongle) to download the patch, and i have had issues like this with other games when downloading updates on the dongle. I have since returned to using a standard wireless network (BT internet)

so. i have uninstalled, and started the reinstall. and i'm having even more fun.

so far i have managed to donload approximately 700mb of game files, even with the current issues, i will list those below:

approximately half of the time the launcher starts out with a red bar instead of the orange one, then recalibrates. when this happens after the recalibration it tells me that wow is fully downloaded.

when the above does not happen, even though the launcher, updater, downloader, repair tool, uninstaller and game exe are set as exceptions to the firewall, the download starts at a reasonable speed, but always drops off quickly and stops downloading quite often.

also, if the launcher has been open for more than about 30 seconds, if i try to close it (by clicking the X in the top right corner) if freezes up, and will not close until i disconnect from the internet.

finally, and most rarely, i sometimes get an Error #132 crash during download, fatal exception / access violation type affair.

i have never had these issues before, and have tried every fix i can think of or find for simillar issues in these forums.

Hi.

I apologize for being that guy, however wireless connections are not supported as they are susceptible to interference which cannot be effectively controlled or troubleshooted.

I would strongly recommend you try connecting using Ethernet if that is possible.

Can I ask if you have a Cataclysm DVD?

Currently the Cataclysm DVD is by far the most reliable (and fastest) way of installing World of Warcraft. If you have friends living nearby who also play, it would be worth asking if you could borrow it.

Open the Launcher. Click on Options. Select Downloader Preferences. Toggle Peer-to-Peer Transfer.

The next time you get one, if you paste it here to the Forum, I'd be happy to look at it and see if it highlights a problem that we can resolve without starting the download all over again.

Unfortunately due to the building in which i live, an ethernet link is not available... i know it's by far more stable and reliable, but the management don't allow it.

i bought my cata upgrade digitally, so no disk unfortunately... in fact, the only disk i can currently find is my wrath one.. though i know i have the classic and tbc ones about somewhere.

i have already checked the p2p downloading thing... tried it with it on and off.
when it's off the download speed drops off faster than with it on (usually).

i have had it stay at 1.2 mb/s for about 10 minutes once so far. most of the time it gives me 2-5 minutes at between 500 kb/s and 1mb/s before dropping down to 10-50 kb/s and then stalling at 0.0b/s

to be honest the two things that confuse me the most are the fact that without fail 50% of the time it downloads for 30 seconds to a minute before telling me it's finished (freezes up if i click 'play') and that whenever i try to close the launcher i have to disconnect from the internet.

if i'm honest this wouldn't normally be too much of an issue, as i could take my pc over to a family member's or friend's place and get it sorted, but i signed up for the annual pass, and that means i can't just stop paying for wow until i get it fixed... the thought of paying for something that i cannot use grates on my nerves a little. :(

Hi.

There is software interfering with the downloader.

Either your anti-virus doesn't like it, or you have malware on your system.

time to argue with AVG then i guess...

added them to the exceptions list, will see if that helps.

Also time to run a full AVG scan.

You may wish to also try Malwarebytes.

will check that out. Cheers for the help :)

update: AVG and Malwarebytes scans completed, nothing found.

launcher still connects at a reasonable to good speed for between 10 seconds and 5 minutes before the connection speed drops to almost 0 (or in most cases drops to 0, and the 3 'bliz' seeds disappear from the connection info screen)

have restarted the download, and will leave it overnight, to see if that helps.

Could Windows Defender be the problem?

I'll admit I'm surprised; I was expecting it to be malware as generally anti-virus software stops the download rather than making it ridiculously slow. However, the error report is pretty conclusive in that there is definitely something interfering with it. If Malwarebytes and AVG are both unable to find anything then there's a good chance your system is clean, which means that AVG or Windows Defender is the problem.

i have recently uninstalled Curse client, as it appears that since the most recent update that can cause issues simply by being installed.

here's hoping that it was that... though this is the 4th time i have downloaded WoW.. and it's the first time i have had any of these issues...

usually the slowest the download gets is around 100kb/s ... but with the most recent patch it's become somewhat terrible.

i have all the exe files for wow set as exceptions for both AVG and Windows Firewall... so i doubt it's either of those.

Hi there,

It does sound like something may be throttling the connection, can you try to restart into a Selective Startup and see if this issue persists?
http://eu.battle.net/support/en/article/windows-closing-background-applications

Also, can you check on the Launcher, under Info and Connection Info, and see if the table at the bottom is being filled out with lots of information? Or if it's just empty (or has only one or two lines of information)

Ok. So, i have figured out the Error #1 crash.

it appears that either Steam or EvEMon conflict with the launcher since the most recent patch and optimization.

closing both of those programs on my system stops the crashes, which is something i suppose :).

I habitually close down un-neccessary processes before setting downloads for any of the games i play running, just to free up as many system resources as possible, at the moment, i only have windows, media player, antivirus and the launcher running when i have the launcher running.

having checked the launcher, it appears i get good download speeds (500kb/s to 1.5mb/s) while http://blizzard.vo.llnwd.net (if i'm remembering the name correctly) is connected to the swarm, though that connection is usually the first with the xDL label to drop, and it usually drops within the first 2-5 mins of opening the launcher.

after that time the remaining xDL connections generally have a download speed of 0.0, and i only recieve files from peers. which explains the slow downloads.

I have watched the connection info screen for the past 3 times i have run the launcher, and i usually have at least 10 connections showing on there, (generally many more, but 10 seems to be the low-end, once the swarm has connected properly).
