Right im confused, An enhancement shaman can receive the loot bonus on items that have spirit on them when they have signed as a DPS, regardless of talent. Yet a restro shaman does not get the loot bonus when needing on a dps item.

How is that fair?

The LFR Loot system is about Class and Role. Not the actual Spec being played. Since there are two Shaman DPS Specs, Enhancement & Elemental, then a DPS shaman regardless of their spec can roll on a spirit item as spirit converts to hit for Elementals.

If an item is pure DPS (i.e. no spirit at all), then a resto shaman would not be able to roll on it as they are a Healer role and the DPS item contains no healer stats.

Same applies for instance to Druids. Feral Druids will be able to roll on Boomkin gear the same as Boomkins can roll on Feral gear, the system can only check that A: They are a valid class and B: They are a valid ROLE, it cannot detect the specific spec being played sadly.

Maybe in time they will be able to add it, but for now it can't.

Im sure i read a blue post stating that they are looking into making the loot system recognise the spec they are playing, and implementing it in MoP

In effect, yes, though I would not think that he would be popular with any Shaman healers in the raid group :) :)

Sadly, this is the case at the moment. There have been 5 updates to the LFR loot mechanic since its release in 4.3 and I dare say we will see more, hopefully this would be one issue that would be addressed, but I am not a code monkey, I have no idea how hard it would be to write and implement.

Technically an enhancement shaman can only roll need, and get the roll bonus, for items that are noted as "DPS".
(A lot of caster-specific items are generally noted as both "DPS" and "healer" though).

E.g. :
the shaman (enhancement) gets the roll bonus for mail loot with agility on (duh).
the shaman (enhancement) gets the roll bonus for mail loot with intellect/spirit as those items often are noted as "DPS" too (as well as "healer").
yet the shaman (enhancement) cannot get the roll bonus for items that are specifically meant as "healer-only" items, as the shaman didn't sign up as healer but DPS.

So basically, the shaman can sample gear for its healing set, but he/she cannot get the roll bonus on everything ("healing-gear"-wise).

Encha and Boomkins I can understand being able to need of spirit gear gear, but how comes i've seen ret Paladins get roll bonuses on healer gear?

You remember which item(s) a retri-paladin got bonus on?
Like e.g. I think the weapons from Madness are not restricted that much compared to the rest. (May be wrong).

Was on necks and rings, probably able to get a bonus on trinkets too.

The bonus applies to MAIN spec, AKA the one at the top.

So if a ret was in his OS (Ret) but his MS was Holy he could then get the healer role bonus.
Kinda sucks tbh, wish it was for ACTIVE spec. Or better; The Role you join as.

No, I am afraid it doesn't. It doesn't detect your spec at all.

This is how the loot bonus is determined (as well as class on some items). Healer, DPS or Tank.

they may have been classed as items a healer or a dps could use so he's get the bonus as he's a dps. a bit broken :p

well yes, you could roll for enhancement gear, elemental gear and resto gear. oh to be a shammy!

Basically like a dual wielding frost DK being able to roll on a two hander, or an unholy DK being able to roll on 1 handers. I imagine they will introduce a system to detect spec at some point, but not right now.

SOME healer items.

There's a couple spirit items that are some of the best bits for some ele/shadows yet only healers get the bonus on them.

And ALL the healing trinkets only gives bonus to people joining as healers.

However all in all there's just not such an amazing amount of non-set items that this problem pertains too.

So...how did a retadin who joined as DPS win a tank belt with the role/roll bonus? o-O
