Heya, I am going to be heading off to uni soon, and I have the choice to either buy a decent laptop or a desktop. I am looking for a product that will allow me to game without much hindrance from FPS and fans overheating. My budget is anything upto $1200.

I would prefer to have a premade PC rather than build it myself since I don't know much about building them, but if I do have to, I wouldn't mind the challenge.

I currently own an Acer laptop which I have had for about 2 years now. It worked brilliantly for a year and a half, but now the battery keeps dying quickly if I don't keep it plugged in and it overheats and turns off, which is fairly annoying. I did open it up and cleaned it, and that helped for a while, but it keeps happening again and I don't have the time to do it.

Any other advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

i would recommend building it yourself, as you get power for your money that way, your paying a bit for just having their brand on your computer, some stores aimed directly at hardware also have offers where they build and test your computer for you with parts of your choice.

i would suggest you to wait until the nvidia 600 series is out as the ones in the 500 series will still be fine for most games today, but cheaper. intel ivy bridge also comes this year which is stronger cpu's from intel.

Would not go for a laptop for sure. So I recommend build yourself a system just be sure to get compatible hardware that works together. If u don't wanna set it together yourself, there is many stores that build the systems that also got good prices. Even some of the PC manufactures are starting to make gaming rigs that aren't that expensive. But from personal experience I would make it myself.

I aswell would w8 for the next generation nvidia and intel as Ayun said. But if u want a gaming rig now I would maybe go with an amd cpu atlest u get more for the money. Get a good cpu cooler aswell for the extra money and overclock it abit. The gtx 580 card is still expensive so i would maybe go for the ati radoen 6950 instead, quite cheap and can run all the current new games on ultra/high(depends on res ofc) with fps from 35-60.
