[Discussion] How tall is too tall for a human?
|
I rp Grey as 6"3ft. The men of his bloodline have always been tall and he and his twin are no exceptions. Its not like i make a point of it or try to make myself feel superior.
OT: Id say 6"5-6"7 would be plausible for me. On human scale. Im 6"2 myself and hardly see anyone taller than 6"5 around. |

Strictly speaking, the ages where WoW is set, humans would be of a lower height than we are today. If you want realism, 6" is the max. height I'd aim for. EDIT: Nobody ever goes by this, so just ignore it.
If you're playing by the scale that we look at today, 6"6 is the tallest I'd consider. |

More wikipedia, as a good starting source from which to delve into better sources.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_height#History_of_human_height The footnotes directing you towards the primary sources in this particular page begin around #104. Some other researchers have come up with relevant information as well: I had commented that the average height was shorter then, so being over 6 feet might very well be gigantic, relatively speaking. Well, now I’m doing the follow-up to that. Just how tall have humans been throughout history? |

I would say that it is safe to compare real-life human tallness to the WoW version. The average height for a human male is 5.5 to 6 ft.
Also, according to WoWpedia (and it was quoted on the previous page): http://www.wowpedia.org/Human#Appearance Humans average six feet in height and weigh about 180 pounds, with men noticeably taller and heavier than women.[2] I would agree that seven feet should be the absolute maximum, and perhaps even borders the sue side if not done tastefully in roleplay. However, the underlying issue is not whether or not a human can be that tall, but its the sheer amount of roleplayers out there that tend to make their humans excessively tall, especially those who play characters who are oriented for military purposes in thier character concepts. I believe that there should be noticeable downsides to your character when you make it excessively tall, in order to balance the concept. As stated below me: It's a shame that people who -do- play overly tall characters hardly ever play any downsides in regards to their size. Edit: Browser is not cooperating with me when switching characters, so I guess I post with this character then. Damn university terminals. >_> |

Editted out 'never' for the few who do rp out the downsides. |

This isn't limited to human roleplayers, however. Calthric brings up a fair observation on humans, but I daresay I've seen easily the same amount of night elves, draenei and worgen roleplayers doing the same thing - and I would imagine for the same reasons. I should be very much surprised if the trend was any different on the Horde. |

Greywatch is extremely tall, and in my book, his height on other characters would be trying to make up for something, or trying to just be big and cool.
Greywatch's size is relative to his personality and his history, as I have crafted him very painstakingly through his personality. Everything about him stems from it, such as his height. Being seven foot, two inches tall, he's huge, and built like an iron clad orc. He suffers from sore ankles and a sore back, yes, though in my research into anatomy and my studies of biology, pain from being tall is dependent on several things. I can't be bothered going into specifics of hormone production and secretion, nor can I be bothered to discuss bone growth. As for the rest of my characters, Greywatch's son did not inherit his father's height, as he stands just at six foot, the average height stated by Blizzard. My other characters just touch on average height, some being shorter than it. |
I've seen one doing it. He played a seven foot one giant. Bad back, spine, strains and overall tired quickly. |

Gilneans have been known as the tallest of the human cultures, from what I recall. Though that could be RPG book material.
|
So if your regular Stormwind human reaches 8-9 feet in extreme cases, Gilneans could reach Godzilla-like proportions! |

Ok, going to retcon Calthric as being twenty foot tall in human form and ninety foot in worgen form. ;) On a more serious note, this is an interesting discussion so far! |

Gaeb is about 1.80m. which translates to 5.9' I believe.
I'd say that around 2.10m. would be the 'realistic' upper end for humans. |
