Inspiration vs Plagiarism

There's a huge difference between references that Blizzard makes canon and players trying to shoehorn bad zany references or just flat-out taking something from another universe wholepiece and moving it into Azeroth. No, it's not okay, no amount of "taking inspiration from another universe is fine!" will make it okay. Because it's not just taking inspiration, it's flat out plagiarism.
Basing your own character off a character from another universe, but expanding in different directions? Totally fine, cool. Absolutely brilliant if pulled off correctly. Taking a character from another universe and changing it's name, but being exactly the same? No, no no no no no, no. While a lot of "inspired" RP falls into the former catagory and is ultimately totally harmless, there's still an abundance of RP which falls into the latter and I really just don't understand the appeal in that. |
