What did happen to all the Night elf male gaurds? did they die or are they druids or are they just rare?

There are no male guards/warriors.
Night elves are a matriarchal society, run by women. (well, the women for Nelves are the importanter governer ones, the men are the druids.) |

The majority of Night Elf males became druids after the Sundering, naturally those without or with low druidic potential didn't become druids and were allowed to choose other professions such as ditch digging like the Night Elf male behind the Cenarion Enclave or cooking etc. They were until recently forbidden from joining the Sentinels or priesthood of Elune. Also in game the Blood Elves and Night Elves are a mirror of each other with the Blood Elves having all male guards and the Night Elves having all female guards. |

Night Elves are matriarchal society, though going through some slow changes. Male's either join the druids or are the main workforce for the Kaldorei nation. They also look after the children, educate them and raise them while their mother's are at war. That being said, since joining the Alliance Night Elf customs are slowly changing and the gender barriers are breaking down. However Night Elf male's in the military is something very rare which Night Elf traditionalists may feel uncomfortable about. |

Among the Night Elves, the Females vastly outnumber the males.
That's why you see mostly females everywhere, from trade, social to military districts and such. They also use gender restrictions, meaning Males serve in their own regiments and units, which makes them even rarer. The Sisterhood of Elune is also exclusively female, which is why there are so few, if any, Night Elven male priests. And then a lot of the males also ran off to play druids in the forest and sleep in caves. So yeah, they are pretty few. So visitors are adviced to steer clear of them when visiting Darnassus to avoid making the locals jaelous. Half of the population knows how to wield a bow. |

Well, the Priesthood of Elune isn't exclusively female anymore and women can be druids by now. I think one of the main reasons what that many of the males pretty much left society and became druids.
Saying the Nelfs are a matriarchal society when that doesn't really hold true is weird. If Blizzard wanted to make them a real matriarchal society there are a lot of things they should've done different. Especially since most males being druids, who pretty much don't answer to anyone but themselves and can do whatever they like doesn't fit with this. So I think a society mostly made up by women would be more true then a "matriarchal society". With the second just being caused by the first. @Malizia, shouldn't guys visiting Darnassus be on the safe side. I mean afterall there isn't really a reason to be jealous because two guys hang out together. Unless? |
Especially since most males being druids, who pretty much don't answer to anyone but themselves and can do whatever they like doesn't fit with this. All Night Elves answer to Tyrande regardless of how badly that is portrayed in game. |

It should be noted that ever since the loss of their immortality, more males have started taking on the roles typical to females (such as training to become a member of the Sentinel army), and more females have started taking on the roles typical to males (such as druidism).
Any male Sentinel you see in Ashenvale is likely newly-trained, and any female druid is also likely newly-trained. There were very few, if not no female druids before the night elves lost their immortality. |
Yes, the druids depict this very well in the lore. "Hey stop, come back here! Listen to me goddamit! I'm your ruler! Ahh, screw you guys!" I also like how Malfurion could tell Tyrande to go back to the kitchen if he wanted to do so. Very matriarchal, indeed. |

To be frank, the Female to Male birth ratio among Night Elves is probably scewered in the favor of the Females which is why the society is ruled and filled almost soloaly by females, and why we see so few males (especially prior to gender neutral WoW)

A males dream? What if they leave... !! Why would they mind if let's a human plans to leave after his visit to Darnassus, I doubt he would take any male nelfs with him he met while being there? They don't have any reason to want him to stay. And the Nelfs didn't seem really racist to me, more xenophobic, paranoid, arrogant and trigger happy. Kind of "What's that? No idea! Let's kill it to be safe!" and "You're either with us or you're against us!". |

Society ruled and populated mostly by females will not show as much interest for male stuff, meaning the male part of the culture might be slightly underdeveloped unlike humans where the Males and Females are mostly of the same birth ratio, and males almost exclusively ruled society. A male will have a lot easier time finding a female, that's for sure, but males will not be as big part of society as say Human society which is dominated by males due to them representing a smaller part of the culture(no doubt a big attention to them though). I'm not saying they are oppressed in any way, but society is probably suited more towards females than male due to more minds of the former. Also, being more highly treasured can lead to a lot of competition and extra stress, especially when many of the contenders hold power and position. May have a negative effect on Male's freedom to choose if he's part of society. Plus, it's exclusive to Male Night Elves mostly due to the race's xenophobic nature, so any other race won't find any luck unless they find any deviants. So basically, I guess it looks nice from the distance, but once you get on the inside it might trap you and unveil some nasty sides. Could you imagine how bad it would be in an honour and tradition bound militarized society if your ex who was a Sentinel suspected you had a relationship with a priestess while your mate who was a wealthy merchant thought you were cheating with both? |

Malizia, there are a few flaws with your post. First of all, you couldn't apply our common sense, because a great many things would be inverted! People are looking at a possible matriarchy, especially one with such a horrible gender ratio through the eyes of people grown up in equality/male dominated society.
First of all you're saying that women would in generally run the country and make the decision, because they're the majority. While this isn't wrong at all, you're forgetting about one important factor. The value of each gender. Let's take a 1:2 male to female ratio, and from what you guys are saying it might actually be worse for the night elves. In our modern society women in generally are the more valued gender, because men usually go after them while they can take their pick. I don't think we have to go in depth about biology and why women have to be more picky then men, simply out of protecting their own interest. This mens that women are usually the more sheltered, more valued gender. Even at times when there was discrimination going on, women were never expected to go to war or to die during hard times. They were usually the ones to survive. Males on the other hand are the gender that's simply less worth, more expendable and by far less sheltered ones and society in generally expects more from them. Even nowadays expectations towards women are lower then they are for men, they walk away from commiting crimes for that males would get jailed, people are more empathic towards women and they're better protected by society. Just take a look at homeless people, the vast majority is male because males have a harder time getting help. In night elven society much of this would be inverted, simply because of the massive shortage of males. So it's only to understandable that the female night elves would pick up jobs such as warriors and try to exclude males from them. Because the females are way more expendable then the males are. Even a 1:2 ratio would be a big problem. Because unlike our society where the genders are pretty much even, this would leave a great many "young angry women" who have no chance at ever getting a partner. Simply because there aren't any. Just take a look at the middle east, where young males are often not able to find a suitable partner, either because only the family has a right to decide or because polygamy sucks up a great many women leaving those males without a chance to find a partner. This directly leads to anger, hatred and a feeling of being completly lost. Knowing that they might never stand a real chance this young males are usually very "angry" and "destructive". In night elven society this would be inverted. Just think about it. You wouldn't compete with maybe 1-2 women, but with a great many others for the few males that are available. It would mean that if you don't have a lot to offer, chances are that you wont ever find a husband and you'll never have the chance to have a family on your own. This would directly lead to the very same behavior you can find with those "young angry males". They're simply people who don't have a place in society and no real chance to actually improve their situation. It's only logical to get rid of them by turning them into soldiers and using them up in a war. As hard and mean as it sounds, they would be "excess" that the night elves couldn't fit anywhere into their society. Another important point is, that while females would hold most position of powers. Even those females would have to appeal to possible male partners. They would afterall have fierce competition over the few males in question. Thus they would end up catering to their needs, excuse a great many of their misbehavior and in generall try to make themselves as appealing as possible. Think along the line of some guys going out of their ways to make idiots out of themselves to appeal to a girl, giving her all kind of presents and the likes. And that's in a society where we nearly have a 1:1 ratio! As for your example with the affair. The one at danger would be the other women involved. Afterall they're fighting about that "poor" guy in your example. It's illogical to punish or even kill him instead of the other competitors. That way you would completly lose and you could expect other women around you to react extremly violent to that kind of behavior. Afterall you just killed a perfectly functionable male, of whom there's a egrious shortage. So you could expect them to make up all kind of excuses for the guy, while being extremly hard on the other females. As for you talking about chosing to be a part of society. The night elves couldn't really afford to allow males to do this. They afterall would have a shortage of them already. They simply couldn't allow anyone to wander simply wander off. You could expect them to be pretty protective about them. Extremly protective. |

Oh yeah, I nearly forgot this. As a male you should be "safe" even if discriminated against in night elven society if you were let's say a human. Since they have no real reason at this point to act against you and most likely would behave towards human males in the same way they behave towards their own.
On the other hand living their over a long time, could become problematic. If it were a 1:2 ratio as you at some point said. That would mean from 1500 people, 500 would be male while 1000 would be female. Which would leave us with 500 female night elves with no realistic chance to ever have a partner on their own. 500 very desperate female night elves. No think about putting a battalion of Stormwind soldiers right in front of their doors for a prolonged time. I think anyone could see that this might cause quite a lot of problems on the long run. Because you could expect a great many of them to really be that desperate. So, it might not actually be a males dreams. But it sure as hell would be a nightmare to women to live in that kind of society. Unless you're on of the elites who don't have to worry about their future husband. So next time you visit Darnassus, better leave your boyfriend at home. He might "get lost" during your visit. *shudders* |

I never said they'd be discriminated or oppressed against. In fact, due to the ruling class most likely having male bondmates, it's likely that their voice would go quite high.
But anyhow, it isn't really that bad. Before the Great Tree exploded, Night Elves were immortal. They had all the time in the world to find a partner. They still becom thousands of years old, and this still leads a lot of room to go 'fishing'. (with such long lifetimes, it's likely that they'll often drift from partners among the long centuries) As for becoming 'desperate', that reminds me of Old Greek society, where males spent so much time among each other that they actually developed more real love with each other than with their housewives.(especially common among the warriors) That effectively turned their wife into just reproduction while they often sought their fellow men for real pleasure. I doubt the reaction is all too different among the genders, so I wouldn't worry too much about desperation. Night Elves also have a superiority complex, so sexual intercouse with a lesser race would probably be frowned upon within their society. So no, some of them might be eager, sure, but I don't think we'd have to worry about Sentinels violating their fellow Alliance soldiers :P |

There are several problems with this, first of all time would do nothing for the gender ratio. If anything it would get worse!
Let's go by generations: Generation 1. 500 males : 1000 females = 500 females surplus Generation 2. 500 males : 1500 females = 1000 females surplus Generation 3. 500 males : 2000 females = 1500 females surplus If anything, things would get worse and the occasional break up wouldn't fix that nor help in any kind of meaningfull way. Especially since it would also free up an female night elf. As for the Greeks as an example, something similar often happened with sailors, pirates and in jails. This however isn't really because these people prefer to do so, but because they simply don't have any other viable option. Them getting used to it on the long run doesn't really change that. And the boy loving tendecies of the Ancient greeks in generally are blown out of proportion. Also it's important to take into consideration that men from the data we have tend to be gay far more often then women do. There are about 2-4 times as many !@#$%^-*!@#$ males as there are lesbians. Despite what some guys would like to believe, you know the whole every girl likes to get it on with every other girl. Again male fantasy only, not real. |

If they had a birth ratio between 25-35%, it wouldn't just magically change. Their numbers may increase, but that doesn't affect the ratio. By pure coincidence, the ratio can be altered by 5% normally, plus or minus, but the general graph remains the same. |
