Sounds like something they'd scavange from the depths of their 'where the sun don't shine's. And this is a fantasy setting :p Even in a fantasy setting, we adhere to a degree of reason. Get stepped on by a dragon and you get squashed :P Or why Aragorn didn't just demolish the legions of Mordor with lasers from his eyes and lightning from his rear.
A combination of fantasy and logic is what builds a solid lore universe, as you weigh the two carefully against each other. I'm talking psychology and physiology, where males are the natural Nr.1 choice for a warlord that needs warriors due to their nature. Also, even the tribes with female warriors still had male warriors as well. The females were just an excellent way of doubling the numbers. (When humans are desperate enough, we've even shown that we're willing to throw little girls into the fray)
I'm pretty sure that we can conclude that from everything we've seen from the artwork and ingame models, and everything we know about male and female biology, that the males far stronger, while at the same time being just as suitable for sneaking and range perception. The reason I believe there to be more females is because that seems like the most obvious cause of this, the most fool proof explenation I've been able to come up with so far. I wouldn't believe this if females had just a higher social standing, but by the fact that they occupy the vast majority of their armies, whom among all other races is a male proffession, that leads me to see few other alternatives. The only other alternative I saw was that female Night Elves were actually tougher and bigger than Male Night Elves, but we know that's not true so that doesn't work, leaving me with the superior numbers theory.
Yes, but even if their lore is in shambles, we cannot claim to understand or know the lore unless we at the very least try to interpretate it and come up with the most logical conclusion from what we know about the lore universe, and how things generally fit together. Common sense tends to work really well... ... well, at least until Metzen decides to come around, that is... |

About the males being larger and therefore tougher thing... That's more likely to be because the majority of players are male so they will be in-game. When it comes to saying that males are always larger than females, you are quite wrong-even with !@#$ sapiens. When it comes to other species completely, there are quite a few in which females are the exact same size and strength and also ones in which the females are larger as they need to defend themselves (and their kids). So looking at the night elves as a different species thing, that may be why they would be the soldiers.
