Night Elf Eye Color
|
Sorry if this have been up earlier, but I couldn't find anything so...
...Did anyone realise that the Night Elf females and males have different color, the females eyes are pretty much white while the males have slightly yellow. Couldn't find any lore about it niether, maybe any of you guys know, or has a theory? Mine would be that the natural color is the males one and that the females are supposed to be priestesses of elune or something... Well idk lol |

Most night elves should really have pale white eyes. It's the most normal kind. The 'rare and few' night elves with golden eyes are, according to night elf superstition, destined for greatness - and especially seem to have a knack for druidism. It doesn't mean that you can't be a druid if you have silver eyes though, or that you have to be a druid if you have golden eyes.
At any rate, famous people from the past who had golden eyes include Queen Azshara and Illidan Stormrage. I don't actually think Malfurion had golden eyes in the lore.. -shrug- |

Probably just an oversight that they never paid any particular heed to.

I don't think that golden eyes mean you're going to be a druid, I'm pretty sure that the Highborne, who generally believed they were better than the normal elves, would have had golden eyes, which means you are destined for greatness like Illidan or Azshara was, and the Highborne are like the opposite to Druids in Night Elven society. The males have golden eyes now due to some sort of evolution thing, golden eyes used to very uncommon, but now pretty much all males have golden eyes.
And, yes, as far as I'm aware Malfurion didn't have silver eyes, but seeing as pretty much all elves alive today were likely born during the time when gold eyes were uncommon, one could presume that the 'all males have golden eyes' thing is a non-generational evolution, ie. an alteration to general physiology within a single generation, something that would/could never happen in real life but Azeroth is MAGIC, so it can happen. PS. 'Non-generational evolution' is not an official term, I just made it up (as far as I'm aware :P) |

No, but it's a sign of great druidic potential. Which makes it ironic that Illidan and Azshara had them, while Malfurion did not. |

Given that he has completely ignored the Horde's actions with the blight, evil magic and chopping down Ashenvale, I dare say that Malfurion is a VERY BAD Druid :P |

Males and females just buy the batteries that power their eyes from different stores.
Or alternatively use a different voltage. |

Lorewise most night elves are supposed to have silver eyes.
They just gave the males golden eyes, well... because they could really. That and many males are traditionly druids. |

EPIC FAIL!!! The amber eyes means you are destined for greatness. However, it's common for powerful Druid's eyes to become amber after some time. |

EPIC FAIL!!! Its actually just a Night Elf legend that golden eyes are a sign of a great destiny. Unsurprisingly it was the Highborne that came up with this way of thinking as another way to distinguish and elevate themselves above the silver eyed masses. Golden eyes are actually a symbol for powerful druidic ability and any Night Elf regardless of gender can gain golden eyes when they gain enough power and wisdom in druidism. E.g Malfurion and Broll, both born with silver eyes, both gained golden eyes after X amount of time practicing druidism. |

EPIC FAIL!!! Yea that's what I was trying to say. |

As for the models, my guess would be that since druid is the only class male Night Elves are supposed to be able to be(lorewise), it made sense to give them golden eyes as part of the package - everyone would've wanted 'em anyway, while females - lorewise - can be any class except for druids, and as such were given silver eyes straight off.
Two other points worth considering; Adding options for both colours would mean they'd have to add more options to the other races as well, since it was decided all races should have five customisation options. Secondly, most races had both an alpha model and a release model created - the alpha model for testing purposes, and the release model to look good. Exceptions to this exist - notably the humans were never given a release model (this is why they look so terribly goofy), Night Elves may be another exception, although I'm not sure.... could anyone confirm? |

the female model eye is a silver glow -- not pale white
and the male model eye is an amber or golden glow - not yellow like undead Furthermore in the lore the majority of the night elves male and female have silver eyes Golden uset ot be excepptionally rare, limited to a handful of individuals out of millions, now that percentage is much much higher but is still a tiny percentage of the poulation. the increase in golden eyes has been linked to stronger ties with nature.. and those who've been druids for long and grown very strong in the discipline have developed golden eye colours. The glow comes from their magical affinity and link to the well, and is a hint of the power they hold, but one they are forbidden to use ever since the sundering when they passed that law. Behind the glow, they have normal eyes, colours of which incl purple, blue, green, brown, black, hazel, grey, pink, red and yellow. There is an article about elven eyes on the wow encyclopedia of the main site |
