How to think as a mage in PVP encounters?

Hi everyone.
I would like to ask for a guide if there is any how to think as a mage vs other classes in 1v1 situations. I mostly pvped on my ret paladin so I'm used to tank and burst heal myself so im not used to kiting a lot. I want to know what to expect from other melees and casters and how to adapt myself and react in certain situations. I'm not seeking any competetive pvp I sometimes logon to my mage and join CTA and random BG's. thanks in advance. Edit: I play frost atm. |

In terms of fire, always make sure you have your DoTs up on him all the time. Obviously always try to keep him at distance. In this case it's useful to use either your Cone of Frost or Blast Wave to slow them down allowing for time to run away. Almost all melee classes have an ability to get you into their range instantly (Shadowstep, Charge, Deathgrip etc.), therefore it is vital to instantly counter these abiltiies. The obvious option is obviously your blink, so make sure to always keep blink up until after they used their CD ability. And if your Blink is on CD a second resort would be either Deep Freeze as frost or Dragon's Breath.
Along with this it's important to keep your defensive shields up at all times since we're the squishiest class in game. Ice Barrier, Mana Shield and Mage Ward are vital to increase your chances of survival. This is just very general stuff to think about when facing melee-ers. If you need any more advice, feel free to ask. |

Though, skilled players are harder to predict. |

Learn one thing, and one thing only: Cooldown management.
Get a good "rotation" going on all your crowd control cooldowns so that you never run out of ways to get away, get off good burst, etc. against casters, you want to be up close and personal, think like a rogue (or any melee class) and stay behind your target. It creates panic and confusion for most players and they feel as if they should be on the defensive. This rule applies to hunters as well, obviously. against melee, stay just outside max range for your shortest range spell (i.e. coc) at all times (except vs warriors, where you want to be in the deadzone, i.e. point between melee range and charge range) and don't panic. best thing to do is to duel every class a thousand times (no, I'm not kidding). Then you'll know what to do when and why to do what when you should. :3 |

Going in with a sense of superiority always helps - you'll probably win so enforcing that belief is always a good start. From there, kiting always works.
I see you're fire, so just get lucky RNG procs then global with combustion. EDIT: Oh wait frost, then; If melee connect with you for any long period of time you should consider it a failure and look at how it happened. Perfect management of cooldowns and positioning will allow you to infuriate a lot of people - but basically depends how good your opponent is. If you're an average player and duel a very good player naturally you'll probably lose. But practice on people your own level, and higher to gain experience, and soon enough you'll learn where you can improve. |

Open first on enemy, this is huge advantage, becouse it forces enemy going defensive first.
And to open first as a mage, you have a lot of usefull abilities like Polymorph. You can poly enemy and start cleaning him by SpellStealing his buffs and then open with Shatter or Big Pyro! |
press jump alot I think youll find that all nelf females and all hunters jump 40 times more than any one else in pvp |

press jump alot Lies I jump more than any gnome! |
Going in with a sense of superiority always helps - you'll probably win so enforcing that belief is always a good start. From there, kiting always works. I've tried fire and really liked it actually coz of scorch and dragons breath and good reliable damage even when i am mobile. But I had terrible time if enemy team got a well geared feral or a rogue. IDK fire mage pvpers says that ferals are piece of cake but well in this state of cata with my crappy gear a well geared ferals opener is destroying me so I went frost again for more surv. |

<--- Gnome mage who jumps a lot.
I would suggest trying to open with a big shatter to scare the bajeezus out of someone, pop all offensives and then just get up in their face (if ranged) and use ice lance because thats how mages kill people now. |

the tactics every mage is following are differenent imho (depending on talent tree)
In a very simplistic way: Frost: his strategies are based on crowd control mostly Fire: his strategies are based mostly dependant on the area he's at that moment... Arcane: he has to manage time, place and mana at the same time... They all have a simple rule: don't let anyone come near... That's the gold rule of mages... Everything else depends on the talent tree |
