Hi,

First off, great game, great great game.

I just started playing yesterday, I got the battlechest pack for £6.99, which I felt was a great deal.

Already part of a guild thanks to Gravelurk from Theif Empire. He also showed me the basics and give me a tour of the Orc city on a rocket, amazing place.

Any hints and tips people would care to share with me, anything from general questing tips to class specific tips??

Any feedback will be fantastic at this point.

First of all , welcome to World of Warcraft! :)

Secondly, I suggest you read http://eu.battle.net/wow/en/forum/topic/1951408186 for any helpful guides/tips.

Thirdly, enjoy the game at your own pace, don't get wound up by the fact that most people are 85:) Levling my first char was one of my most enjoyable experiences in Wow.

Finally, a class specific tips for you :

- As a mage you want to focus mainly on Intellect gear from the quest rewards as it will increase your overal mana pool. Any other stats are helfpul as well but Intellect is the first priority.

Once again, welcome to Wow and I hope you enjoy it for a long time . :)

Hi Merauk, and welcome :)

Yeah, what Exodeo said. Just enjoy the game that's in front of you. It's amazing when you're starting out for the first time - make the most of it!

There's a zillion things to learn, but you'll learn them when you need to learn them, so there's no need to go looking for them. Just keep zapping the mobs and doing the quests for now.

When you do need to learn something - when you're having problems with a quest, or need to know how to travel somewhere, or need to find a Rune of Teleportation (that one had me going for a full day :) or whatever - your friends are

www.wowhead.com

www.wowwiki.com

with a mention to

www.wow-professions.com when you want to make some gold, and

noxxic.com when you want to learn to maximise your damage.

These sites are there when you need them, but you won't need them much!

As people above said, www.wowhead.com is pretty much the most user friendly database we have (I think). Anything, literally anything you don't understand, type it and hit the search button. Countless comments and most of the time a general article on the selected quest, item or whatever you searched for wil pop up and make life so much easier.

Also, ignore the people that are mean and call you noob for not knowing some things, they're just mad their mothers don't love them.

Welcome!

Sure is a great game, and you can have alot of fun while playing it! :)
For me its worth every single penny! having alot of fun pwning those noobs :-D

When it comes to classes, it really depends on what you like.. I can see you have a level 10 mage, mage are one of the best classes in WoW for sure. So thats a good first choice.

I would recommend watching some of the pro players spec, just to start out with.

Frost mage spec: http://us.battle.net/wow/en/character/darkspear/Cartoonz/talent/primary
Fire mage spec: http://us.battle.net/wow/en/character/darkspear/Cartoonz/talent/secondary

If i were you, i wouldnt go Arcane.. its plain boring (atleast for me, but feel free to try it if u want), reason is that arcane pretty much spams arcane blast and thats it..
Frost are really good and fire are pretty much as good :)

Good luck and feel free to ask more in the Thread! i will be checking in too see how it goes with ya and stuff :)

Since it's your first character, read that tip couple of times. This shaman was my first character and it was a pain in the butt to level up because i didn't care about stats and only tried to get as much armor as possible. Fights, especially boss fights, were reaaaaaally looong and my health + mana weren't very high.

Also, learn to use auction house. I first started by selling all kinds of items to vendors and it was REALLY hard to get money for new spells. Don't try to rush through areas. When you make a new character (It will happen some day) and go through those same areas, you'll always get bored. Leveling up your first character is the most enjoyable thing in this game.

Oh, and with all due respect to Ryztad, do ignore - or at least, take with a mountain of salt - advice from well-meaning experienced players who tell you what class, race, spec to play, or which of two zones you should go to to level in next.

My generic advice would be:

Quest as Frost until level 30. Stay far far away from battlegrounds and dungeons unless you're going in with a group of friends.

At 30, pick up Arcane as your second spec. Quest with it for a while to get the feel of it.

Then, sometime after 30, find at least one pal to enter a dungeon group with. Do not go in by yourself! Go in as Arcane. Dungeons are too fast and confusing already for people who haven't been there before; you don't need to be watching out for Frost or Fire procs while you're trying to figure out what to hit.

You can always change your specs later if you want to, and eventually you should, if only to try all of them out.

... and my advice, like Ryztad's, is worth every penny you paid for it.

Intellect - now, that's something we can all agree on! You always want the thing with the most Intellect that you can use.

I did not tell him what class he should make (i said good first choice, because he allready have level 10 mage) or what spec (pointed out that I though arcane was boring and fire/frost are the dominant specs) and i also said after the arcane part 'Atleast for me, feel free to try it)

Specs are by cartoonz, the most popular (?) mage on youtube. Like if he needed a safe spec to go with.

But i agree with the dont listen too people when it comes to choosing a class.. I did it when i first came too wow, and it turned out kinda bad, cause i didnt like to play the class so when i reached 85 and played abit more, i just HAD to level another class cause i just could'nt take it..

So what you can do is, watch some youtube vids or try classes out for your self and see who feels the best, looks more interesting.

And when it comes to Race, choose the one you think look the best, cause when you are playing you have to look at your char everytime. If u dont like the sight it can get boring (not all people are like that but for me) so choose a race you think look beast! and go with it.
Im regreting my choice as a troll, cause i kinda dont like it. Was looking forward to being panda cause then all of my forms are animals, but after finding out Panda cant be Druids, i got sad haha.

I'll start off by thanking you all for taking the time to share your knowledge and advice with me, that's very kind.

I've already made use of Wowhead, someone in my guild pointed out that I have a free bank slot, WoWhead was able to point me In the direction of the Orc City Bank. As my backpack was full with herbs I have gathered there was no room left for anything else, not even quest items can be picked up without backpack room!! So this was a blessing, a guild member has also sent me 2 more bags and this is incredible as I have tons more space.

The game so far has exceeded all expectations, being an FPS head for 10 years and playing only 2 games in that time (CS and MOHAA) I didn't really have much expectation for a fantasy game that reminded me of lord of the rings. Well, I was wrong, really wrong. The WASD system is a tried and tested way to comfortably move around, it works great in this game. The relationship you have with the character is surprisingly strong, the landscapes are vast and easy on the eye, you have dark, cold areas to big and bright desert like land, I should imagine I’ve not seen anything yet being a mere level 14. The quests are interesting, some are story based whilst you have some simple gather and go quests. In general the gameplay is nice and for a beginner the quest tracker, with the arrow pointing to your destination on the mini map is a real blessing, without it I would be lost.

Now, I know all these herbs I’m collecting are useful for something, what is that? or can I sell them?

So far I am more than happy just questing, some guild members have advised doing dungeon runs but I don't feel I have enough skill to be of any use, I might be a burden on the group, that's not good!

I’ll keep this post updated with my experiences, I can always use the advice people are kindly leaving.

Farewell for now.

Herbs are mostly used in professions such as alchemy (Potions and elixirs) and inscription (Glyphs, cards and some off-hand items). As a low level player, you should seriously consider if you should sell them for a lot of money in auction house or start another profession where you can use them yourself. Keep in mind you can only have maximum of 2 primary professions at a time.

Primary professions;

(Gathering)
Mining
Herbalism
Skinning

(Production)
Alchemy
Blacksmithing
Enchanting
Engineering
Inscription
Jewelcrafting
Leatherworking
Tailoring

You can also have ALL the secondary professions (Archaeology, cooking, fishing and First aid).

Quite.

I started with Herb and Alchemy on this - one of two toons I levelled together as a new player - and still found Alchemy a tough and expensive climb. The Crafting professions do - or at least may - pay off in the long term, but in another one of those opinion thingies, it is perfectly sane for a brand new player to pick up two gathering professions to make money for future toons. When you have your first 100,000 Gold safely in the bank, buying your way to 525 crafting looks a lot easier.

Whatever your long term decision about the second prof, if you've already collected some Peacebloom, this is a great opportunity to make the acquaintance of the Auction House (AH).

According to the UJ, (you'll get used to the abbreviations and acronyms eventually :) https://eu.theunderminejournal.com/item.php?realm=H-Defias%20Brotherhood&item=2447 your Peacebloom will sell for 4 to 5 Gold per stack of 20 on the AH on your realm. Very nice money for a new character.

You go to the AH, right-click on the auctioneer, browse to get a feel for the current price and availability of Peacebloom, then create an auction, setting your bid and buy prices, and the duration of your auction.

Anyone can then buy your Peacebloom immediately at your Buy price, or Bid an amount greater than your bid price, and keep bidding each other up. Highest bid wins at end of auction. Odds are, with Peacebloom, if you're the cheapest, it will be bought outright.

At end of auction, the AH sends you a mail containing either your money or your goods back, attached to the mail.

The market mechanics of the AH are much discussed in many many threads and articles, but I would suggest for your first foray you should just auction your Peacebloom at a price a few coppers below the lowest price currently listed, assuming that price is somewhat sane when compared to what the UJ shows.

Two other pieces of advice:

1. Go see your Herbalism trainer again. Your skill is now 75, and your skill can't increase, no matter how many posies you pick, until you get the next level of training.

2. At your level, the AH is for SELLING, not for buying. Especially, do not buy armour and weapons, no matter how tempting. At low levels, you will be replacing your gear every day or two, and what you get from quest rewards will do fine. If you really must spend your money, against this advice, a) keep at least 20G free for your level 20 riding expenses, and b) spend on something like Netherweave Bags, that will last beyond tomorrow.

I was wondering why nothing was happening, I will visit the trainer later on tonight when playing.

Thanks for all the great advice.

Afterthought:

I didn't notice that you had taken Tailoring as a second profession, though you haven't done anything with it yet.

As a general rule, you don't make money from Crafting professions until end-game. I think of levelling crafting as a rather expensive university. Now, I know this is not quite true. People who know the system and the market, and who have capital to start, can and do show a profit while levelling crafting professions. Netherweave Bags, for example, are always in demand, and a tailor who farms a lot of mobs for cloth can make quite respectable cash.

Tailoring is sane for a mage, if you have the idea of making your own cloth armour. Your materials are primarily cloth that drops from the mobs you kill, so you don't need to buy too many mats.

The catch, though, is that for you to tailor your own gear, you have to keep your tailoring up to your character's level, and that is not easy. In other words, to get the class-specific benefit of tailoring, you need to be making it a priority to ensure that your tailoring is as high as you can get it at all times.

I was considering tailoring but for now I am happy enough to just collect my herbs and sell them. It's more than enough to keep me occupied for now, I don't want to get to involved in the more advanced parts of the game just yet.

If your plan is NOT to level tailoring for the moment, then I have a recommendation:

Drop Tailoring. If you're not levelling it and not making money from it, it's doing you no good for now.

(You drop a profession by clicking the red "No Entry" symbol beside it.)

Go to a Mining or Skinning Trainer (your choice!), get trained in Mining or Skinning, buy a Mining Pick or Skinning Knife from a trade goods vendor, and start mining or skinning, and sell your Ore or Hides on the AH as well.

Your Ore or Leather will make money comparable to your herbs, and you can be gathering them while you pick your herbs. Two for the time of one. Very efficient way to make money,

Later, if and when when you do want to take up a crafting prof, you can drop one of your gathering profs in favour of it.

Edit: Oh, and BTW, the cloth that mobs are dropping will also sell nicely on the AH. :)

Never think u are not good enough. NEVER.
Low level instances (starting from lvl 15) dont need good players at all. there are alot of tanks and healers with heirlooms (leveling gear you can buy by getting honor/justice points, but highly recommend to level up a char, get him geared and then farm for heirlooms at level 85. Cause at 85 u get MUCH more honor points then you do at level 14, and heirlooms cost 2k honor points and stuff and i believe u get 45 (+ honor gained in-Battleground) honorpoints per. game.

But if u just wanna do quests, go for it! but i think at low levels instances are slightly faster since u get much XP/good quests in instances.

Just use ur pet and use the pet freeze, then pump out dmg :D

I was advised by some guildies to try out the Dungeon finder last night, I think the dungeon was called shadowfang keep.

Really enjoyed it, the group were pretty fast paced by I explained my position and was told to just stay back and attack when the mobs are already engaged.

I didn't die once, so that was a great start. The only thing I did wrong was select need for everything, which I have since learned is wrong after asking guildies what a ninja is.

Also picked up Skinning as a secondary gathering profession which seems to be going up real quick, its just a case now of understanding my spells and getting more comfortable with key binding as I am finding it hard clicking spells. Being a gamer already I will easily familiarise myself with the key binds, I just need to practice it.
