Topic [Guild Economy] What do you do with the Guild Funds?
I figured this was a good place to start a discussion about the matter of guild bank money. And I do hope we can get a decent discussion going on the topic, so please feel free to contribute.
As an officer of my guild, I've volunteered to be the keeper of the guild bank. That means that I auction off items in the guild bank, occasionally restock the materials we need for raiding (though other officers also do this when needed), and generally clean up the guild tabs once in a while.
The amount of gold and items in a guild's bank will of course vary, but for a guild of my size, it's generally kept fairly even - without doing anything on the auction house, our income is roughly equal to the cost of paying for flasks and repairs for 20+ raiders.
If I put any effort into auctioning things, or spending the guild bank money in the pursuit of profit, it's fairly easy to do so too - though, the marked is a lot slower now, this close to Mists.
While I'm not one of those people who spend most of their time earning (lots) of money from playing the AH, I do have an interest in keeping my Guild happy and prosperous, and with Mists I'm planning to be even more active than I am now.
Thus, one of the things I'm most interested in discussion, is how to utilise the funds. As it is, we can easily cover raid materials. With Mists I imagine we'll dip rather heavily into the currently saved funds - craftables, flasks and food being more expensive at the start of an expansion, etc - but I can't imagine it'll be too difficult to build it back up.
And given that our members are important contributors in our income, I feel that somehow, it should be given back to them. Money that's just sitting around in the bank, never being used, is hardly a benefit to the guild, right?
But how, exactly, do I give it back? Raid materials is one thing and easily covered, but are there other ways? Just giving people piles of gold will become a conflict, sooner rather than later, I bet.
Do any of you have any experience with this?
How do you manage your guild bank and guild money?
Given how easily money becomes a point of conflict, how do you make it fair?
And on a more practical note; are there addons out there that I can use to track my spendings and earnings? I've considered making a spreadsheet but having to write everything down manually is a bit tedious.
As a Guild Leader of my own guild. I see to it that the gold is also used for gems and enchants. Other than that, I give the core contributors more repair gold than the lesser contributors. It seems to work out great, but its roughly spending as much gold as we earn, other than that, I'd say the best thing to do is to wait for Mist of Pandaria and use the gold for the early gems and gears for that. Everyone will most likely want to raid quickly, and you should be prepared for that.
Our gbank gives raiders free raid food (which ain't cheap!), and cauldrons. We pay for repairs during raids and at the end of each year I pay an attendance bonus to all raiders, based on the number of raids they actually show up for. We've also helped with gear / gems etc in the past but generally our raiders are pretty good about getting things for themselves.
Our gbank's very well off despite the small roster and low activity so I try to size the raider bonus to leave us around the 100k mark for the new year. The idea is that we have plenty of funds to cover everything that might possibly be needed going forward although tbh I've not had to draw on them yet so I might review things for MoP and start paying the members back a little more :)
Don't know about any addons, sorry. I use spreadsheets for any monitoring I need to do (which is mainly working out whether it's cheaper to raw mats for items needed by the guild, or whether the crafted is better.)
We run a weekly guild activity competition. The player with the highest weekly activity at 8pm server time each Tuesday gets a gold prize. Ours is 1000 but of course you can set your own. It can also be a great motivational tool. We have other competitions paid by the guild bank too.
