Sooo I decided to make alt tank. I'm thinking about Druid/Paladin/Warrior. Can someone experienced write pros and cons of these 3 classes? I will play mostly PvE.

Instead class descriptions from other players think what styled tank you may enjoy to play ? 1st 2 categories are absorb tanks, shield tanks ? Want to be more mobile ? Have more available cooldowns ? More available raid cooldowns and tricks ? You want it for 5 men mainly ? grinding ? DPS OS ?

Every and each tank class has its own perks and down sides. I.e. DK is good magic tank, but has mobility of a snail, while warrior has excellent mobility, they have to do gymnastics every time something magical is flying towards their way. Paladins have gazillion funny buttons, but are close to mobile as DK, and druid is having funky kind of absorb mechanic, but has decent mobility depending of fight and so on.

I have tank of each class and me for example paladin is too slow compared to DK. And I mean slow as in button smashing. Warriors have to spamm buttons, but for whole different reasons as dk. Druid is - for me inbetween and good alt-tank for dk. Not as spammy as dk, not as afk-mode as paladin, and not as stressful as warrior.

Each class offers difference approach and you know self best what you seek from your tank. What kind of game play you love.

Warriors get a absorb in Mists too againts magic.

Anyways warriors have awesome mobility, come mists we will have to finaly follow our rage for Shield Block and Shield Barrier.
Shield Block 60 rage, blocks 30% of incomming melee hit, can be critical block for 60%
Shield Barrier 20 absorb increases upto a total of 60 rage, the more attack power the more it absorbs.
Rage will be generated mainly by shield slam and revenge, shout and charge. Procs increasing rage gained from shield slam and finishing its CD. While in def stance also gaining 1 rage every 3 seconds
Tons of other buttons to use also.

Hope someone can give MoP related info for the other classes

Instead of pros and cons, think of it this way: what seperates these classes from eachother? They're not just carbon copies.


  • Resource system: the primary reason I switched from my TBC druid tank to my DK when WOTLK came out. I like RP & runes a lot more than I like rage as a mechanic.
  • Tool set: do you prefer charge of death grip? Would you like a stun? etc.
  • Gear: shield or not? Leather or plate? How does the tier set look? This is important both for mechanics and looks.
  • Theme: I like displaying class pride. I ride my deathcharger and a frostwyrm. If I was still on my druid, I'd farm Anzu until it drops. Some people dislike the nature theme of druids, others say there's nothing more badass than tanking with your face.


Using these criteria, work out for yourself what class suits you the most.

Building on the theme

Druid - you're a freaking bear. Put yourself in the mobs shoes, you have a massive bear with huge teeth swiping at you. It's roaring. It's making you bleed.

Paladin - you're a devout believer in the light. You use your pure heart and goodness to draw on higher powers to protect your party and command enemies to attack you.

Death Knight - you're an unholy crusader. You use dark magic to inflict diseases on the enemy and their blood to heal yourself.

Warrior - you're a screaming fighter, using purely physical attacks and presence to smash enemies with your shield, screaming at them and leaping right in to the centre of battle.

For me, Warriors appeal most. I like the idea that I'm not using magic, but instead going right in to the centre of battle on my own. Most abilities for each class play on these themes too.

Now, as mentioned above, different classes have different levels of maintenance. Warriors, for example, have a button for just about everything - usually more than they can press and far more than their rage will allow them.

Paladins on the other hand are far more measured and built around a key ability for each situation and filling it in with other abilities to pass the time.

What MoP will bring to change this playstyle is yet to be seen, but it's unlikely that they'll make Paladins as frantic as Warriors or rebuild Warriors to have less to do - it would ruin the classes and upset their players.

So basically they ahve made every tank class more or less copies of themselves, only that likely shield tanks will be more useful at start of game and abrob tanks will have to whine to get their shine, then shield tanks complain like they did with DS and circle goes on :P
