New loot system is not very effective

With the release of MoP we had the release of a new loot system where players areno longer able to see if a person needs or greeds on an item. Whilst I see the benefit of this to some degree I've noticed also that it's become more of an advantage to 'ninja' items from players because they can need and not be seen until the roll is complete by which time in an instance the player usually leaves the group.

An example of this would be brewfest. As a holy paladin, I find the healing trinket dropped formt eh Coren Direbrew encounter. Being a healer I needed on it only to find that the dps Shaman had needed also and won the roll before being able to contest he'd left the dungeon. As you can understand I was pretty angry at the blatent ninja and I suggest that blizzard have another look at the system.

They either A need to specialise it so only classes can need on items they can use mainspec. Or assign a roll bonus to stop this ninjaing occuring.

Another example also was my friend in the same dungeon needed on the tank trinket as a tank to have it ninjaed also. Whist this is one encounter its happened in others also and its disheartening to know that what should rightfully be mine because of my role goes to a player who doesn't equip it or disenchants it in front of your eyes. (Another thing which annoys me)

Now people may say I'm whining or complaining but I'm not. I'm merely trying to highlight a flaw in what is supposed to be an upgraded system. At least before when you could see who needed and greeded the ninjaing was less likely to occur as a result of players actually supporting the role it belonged to.

e.g. Old system warlock needed on healer trinket, other players said that healer had prio when both selected need.

You can't. You can only see who wins the roll and if its with a need or greed.

I don't think the OP knows that you can type /loot to see who needs/greed/passes, or download an addon which improves the need/greed/pass area to show who clicks on them.

I can. My addon shows pretty clear the amount of players who have pressed the need button, greed button, disenchant and pass. It also shows who those players are.

Blue tagging for visibility.

I've done a few dungeons myself during this weekend and I've noticed that some players are simply unaware of this feature, sometimes I saw some people needing on offspec stuff because they weren't seeing any "need" rolls from other players, obviously this can lead to some arguing.

So here it is again for the sake of clarity, please type /loot, /lootrolls or you can just click on [Loot] in the chat window.
This will open a new loot window that shows you all rolls on every item.
You can also go to Interface->Controls-> and click on “Auto Open Loot Rolls Window!”

Can't the entire loot system window be a toggle? With default off.

If you want the old system being able to see the rolls you have it.. If you don't toggle loot feature on.

I've used the window for this reason most of the time, but when running dungeons with a buddy, I am so glad that I can see it. Sometimes an item drops and everyone can Need on it, regardless of armortype, role, spec, whatever. And there's always some *bleeep* that Needs on it, just because the system allows it. So if my buddy or I actually need that item, we roll Need for each other.

It's good for seeing offspec rolls, it's even better for seeing Ninja-rolls!

WoW simply needs a 2nd Need option for loot rolls. Requiring the players to ask around, wait for answers if they may roll etc. goes against the whole "go in, kill, get loot" principle. (Which I actually don't like :( )

That would also allow the system to be improved with spec specifications for items. Allowing only main spec players to roll need ...

Wait.. just add the Lfr loot system and that concern will be gone. :P

I had no idea, you could do that. Where the heck, should we know we could type: /roll?

So basicly you implemented in cataclysm a loot system for LFR that works fantastic, On the 5 mans melee plate couldnt ninja the tank items.
So now we are on new content without any of the above things.
I am sorry to tell you but they arent pressing need becouse they can't see the rolls they are pressing becouse you let them have the option to need.
Same example very easy, dont let a child with sweet candy alone in the room they will get it.

In my opinion it has nothing to do with the loot option visibility, but the option that the loot can be neededby any 1 who wants it and it doesnt matter if it is for their spec or not

There's a toggle to automatically open up the /loot window every roll.

Look for it under Interface options.

Just an idea, but maybe put a little message in the chat screen when players enter a dungeon to inform them of this.

While we're at it; how about having the loot window close automatically ~20 seconds or so after someone has recieved the item?

As this is a fairly new feature, it's bound to be improved over time.
I think some sort of messaging is probably a good idea; I'll pass that suggestion to the devs along with some of the feedback that was presented on this thread.

I was excited when I read that the loot window would be redone for Pandaria. However, the implementation didn't really meet my expectations.

You can set the loot window to open automatically, but in order to see who has rolled on it, you need to click on a tiny + sign and then it shows everyone. Being able to view the history of rolls etc is fine when you want to figure out what happened after the loot was given out, but it doesn't help you the way it should when you are trying to decide if you want to need on something. The egg trinket is a very good example (the passive intellect makes it useful for mages, but I would never take it from a main spec healer).

What should the roll window tell us? (Not the loot window - the old one where you click on pass/greed/DE/need.)

The most important thing is that it should show the highest priority roll requests as they happen. So, when the healer rolls on the egg trinket, it would immediately show the need roll symbol, the healing role symbol and the name of the player. If the highest priority request is a greed and I can see the healer has greeded, I can safely need-roll on something that would be "off-spec" or non-ideal for my class.

If another player has greeded on the item after someone has needed on it, I might find the information useful, but it's not a top priority, so if I need to know that, I can open the loot window. The full roll status could also be shown as a floating tooltip when I mouse over that roll window.

These things are entirely doable in a custom addon. I have looked several times for a roll status window addon, but haven't found one.

Summary: the popups for rolling need to have more useful information. Put the information where it's easy to find and correlates with the available actions.

I didn't know that one could request the roll info by typing /loot, so during the dungeons i've run, if i wanted somehting even for off spec, i've just rolled "need" on it to be sure that it didnt get DE'ed.

On a few occations i've won a need roll on my off spec, and someone else more eligble was also rolling need. It is however nothing that cant be resolved by being civil and merely trading the item to said person.

The auto loot window should also fade out after everyone has rolled plus 20(?) seconds or so. As it is distracting otherwise.

Or even better idea!

Give us the option to have the old style loot rolls showing instead of the new 'let's fix something that isn't broken so we can break it' loot window :D

Oh! and whilst your at it, please Please PLEASE! for the love of the old gods, give us an option to turn off the damn loot/achivment/guild achivment/guild challenge/guild dungeon/guild scenario toasts or at least MOVE the damnable things away from the middle of the window!

It was getting cluttered enough in cata but now with the extra 'loot win' toasts added on top, it can compleatly cover the entire center collum of the screen o_O

I've died a few times due to these things popping up right over the center of my screen leaving me unable to see what the hell is going on directly infront of me, even had dungeon groups wipe because the tanks had them pop up on there screen preventing them from seeing what their doing and looseing aggro on packs.

For me they are directly over my bars preventing me from seeing ability cd's (please remember not everyone uses the default ui wether it's for personal or disabilty reasons) and even worse is, if you accidentally mouse over them before they've compleatly faded they pop back up at full strength D: Heaven forbid if you accidentally click on it, then your entire screen gets covered in the achievment window opening D:
