You're probably in a zone affected by a new feature called Cross-realm Zones. This means that certain realms will share certain zones with you, and you'll be able to see these players from those realms.

If you see a player with an (*) next to his name in an unusual zone, like one in Pandaria, its likely that player is grouped up with a friend on Real ID/BattleTag and was pulled into your realm. It does that as well.
