Backstab sucks for pvp .was fine back in the day for pvp as it was a integrate part of stun locking with the Seal Fate talent. Now though it's just crap, if it doesn't crit you do piss poor dmg. And you can't do any sort of stun locking so you can't keep opponents back to you. So many ways for a wised up oppoennt to beat backstab it's not even funny.

Stunlocking is not necessary for you to get behind people...

Also, what ability would you rather recommend people to use? A Backstab crit does more damage than a 2x critted Mutilate and a non-crit Backstab only does ~500 less than a 1x (mainhand) crit Mutilate.

Above figures were done with a PvE Mutilate and a PvP Backstab spec respectively.

I tried sub with an ilvl 264 axe, then with an ilvl 200 dagger.

I felt a lot more competent with the dagger.

Backstab is fine. How many times have you had another rogue or feral Dodge your kidney shot because you didnt get behind your target? So what if it requires you to be behind your target! other abilitys do also for them to land without getting dodged / parried.

If you cant get behind your target as sub then its a L2P issue

But backstab still requires you to be behind the target hemo does not
So you have two keybinds, I, for instance, have backstab bound to q and hemo bound to e.

If he is facing me I e him, run through, turn around and q to my heart's delight. If he turns I turn with him. (While messing around blowing all my cooldowns.)

i have both bound to the same button (mouse wheel up) with/without shift, so backstabbing someone is often as easy as mwheeldown->mwheelup (gouge and BS respectively) - that gives enough time to move into position for backstab. Then there are stuns, and if there are problems i just press shift and mwheelup does hemorrhage instead.

Also - hemo is still good to use, since glyphed it puts a bleed on the target, and you do more damage vs bleeding ones, and it gives +30% on your rupture as well (which refreshes on eviscerate btw).

And even before the glyph of gouge that allowed you its use from any position, it wasn't as simple as "turning to face the rogue", since that set you up for a gouge - even if that falls off on next dot tick, it gives enough time to backstab once, and gouge+backstab is still more damage than two hemos.

Hemorrhage is 11 energy less though, and nice if you need quick combo points for a full eviscerate/KS, or a quick SnD/recuperate.

Moving around generally solves this problem :D

f stun locking with the Seal Fate talent

SF was nowhere near required for stunlocks, in fact Prep builds could do that much better.
Otoh: SF was more fun to play, and you could get away with it for PvE ^^
