Indeed most roleplaying is organized within groups. While there can be found some RP outside groups around the pig in stormwind, it is limited to that theme.

As mentioned in the RP spotlight, you will have to contact groups in order to join RP. In this sticky, it is described for each group how they want to be contacted. This is almost always whisper someone in it, to establish contact.
This also lists which groups are willingly accepting RP beginners to teach.

Most groups exists as guilds, but many of them certainly still allows people outside the guild to join. So even if already bound to a guild, you can look for a RP group.

This thread is meant to gather all currently active Roleplay communities and Roleplay guilds (light RP, heavy RP, as long you are active in RP as a guild/community you are welcome in this list), for both Alliance and Horde sides.

You can also try with the guild finder, but many find it so limited that it is not used. Furthermore an estimate is that about 5-10% of the guild found with it are actually active RP guilds.
Keep in mind that you can open the guild finder by typing /gf even if you are in a guild.

Be sure to also check out the SWC wiki which contains additional information some of the guilds listed, as well as a list of some of the roleplaying characters on the server.

OOC information This is to contain - are you a light or heavy RP guilds. Do you hold planned events, or do you just roam stormwind. And a link to wiki/guild forum and forum thread. - Tip: forum thread links will appear clickable! You can have multiple links.
To join the RP Is membership of guild required, whom or how to contact the guild if one wants to join and any restrictions. This includes things such as if you require members to present a character profile and so on. Very long descriptions of guild lore compatability can be summerized as "A character is required to have a background compatible with the guild lore which is found on website"
Also most important. Do you accept people to join events from outside the guild?
And - Do you accept people who are new to RP?

Channels.

To my experience, there are so many people and their alt that any new player entering will not be taken note of. If you wish to be noted, you may wish to introduce yourself.

Lookingforrp: /join Lookingforrp.
What is: Lookingforrp, is the public channel for all which every single person interested in RP can join. However many RPers choose not to use it, because it from time to time have been a victim of trade chat like issues with regards to random spam.
This channel exists both on horde and alliance. Same purpose.

Acherus /join Acherus
What is An OOC channel made by Fredian. Its there to create random RP and events that suits death knights, rather than hang around old town which is bad. Its also there to give or take advice for other death knight RPers

Horde channels

TrollRP: /Join TrollRP
What is: Created by Dyo. It is a place where lore can be discussed plots formulated, ideas thrown about, events planed and over all Troll-esk things done! I do hope this catches on and that we see some Trolls appear out of the ether!

Alliance channels

KaldoreiRP: /join kaldoreiRP.
What is: KaldoreiRP is by mainly made up of night elves who chooses to live in Kalimdor. If you intend is to RP in kalimdor then you should join this channel.

DraeneiRP /join DraeneiRP
What is: DraeneiRP, Not much else known. (Might not be active)

Demon Hunter /join Eredarkarkun

Cross faction community.
The Earthen Ring Is community of Shaman that seek deal with the Elemental upheaval caused by the Cataclysm.
OOC information: It is a community seeking to hold cross faction events and meetings. Being a community a custom chat channel is used in place of guild chat.
To Join: /join EarthenRing and then talk to Earthborn on horde. All shaman and shaman like characters are welcome.

Theme: Military Warband of the New Horde.
Restrictions: Level 20; No Forsaken and Death Knights; Blood Elves are considered but rarely accepted.

Crimson Sun Brigade Is a Militaristic mercenary guild.
OOC information: Medium RP with both events and casual roaming. Complete information on http://scarteleu.wikia.com/wiki/Crimson_Sun_Brigade.
We can be hired IC to attend other players' or groups'/guilds' events as extra hands or security. We are trying to be as faction neutral as possible, meaning we accept contracts from both the Alliance and the Horde so long as they don't ask we take direct action in the Horde/Alliance war.
To join Contact Koránith, Yngvar, Ysaac, Groshnahk or Rhamok. A Basic understanding of the lore is required. Beginners who are willing to learn are accepted. Membership is not required to RP with us. Some events are closed to the guild, but others are open for all.

Name: The Gathering Storm
Theme: Covert organisation dedicated to preserving Azeroths Balance. Known for brutal political intrigue. The Eye's of the Storm advise the Stormlord on where and when his Thunders must act and how. Premonitions of dire events in the Elemental Planes have hastened their activities to a fever pitch.

The Guardian Blades is a medium RP guild, lawful mercenary themed.
OOC information We try to hold RP meetings every Saturday. Dungeon nights every Sunday, depending on people's interest. The RP contracts are rather slow roleplay, we don't do that so often due to difficulty of organizing them. All in all the guild is very laid back with everything.
To Join Contact Shapuka, or use guild finder. Friendly environment for beginner RPers. We accept people to join the RP outside the guild - with a reason.

Name: Rex Tech and Tinkering
Theme: Goblin guild dedicated to the construction of war machinery for the Beastmaw clan. The guild is a project of the Beastmaw clan and take part in their events.

The Unseen Vigil A roleplaying guild for casual players. The guild is an organisation based on acquiring information and artifacts for clients, often in a shady way. Though tolerated within the Horde and allied with it in a sense, the guild takes no part in its battles or political agenda. We are only out to serve ourselves.

OOC Information The guild is hireable by other players / guilds for missions to perform, which will then be turned into guild events. Lacking that, missions will be made up. Theme: An ancient Kaldorei military order dedicated to nature, Balance and the Cenarion Circle.

Name: Crimson Light
Theme: We are a rp guild that raids and we raid well. We bring light to the dark places, sacrificing ourselves to serve those too weak to do it themselves.
Restrictions: Must be at least level 20 and meet the class restrictions if your 60-70. We also recruit the person, not the gear, we can help with gear, we can't help get you a new personality. I am more impressed with someone that can rp than a purple warrior.

GNOME Is the Global Network of Outstanding and Marvelous Engineering)A community where roleplaying engineers gather and hold conventions to show the rest of the roleplaying society here on Steamwheedle just how great Engineering is.
OOC information: We usually go far a field on events. You can also find us in /join tinkertalk
To Join: Contact Mozeu), Steamsprocke, Zaam, Mizzy or Fezda. Or use the guild finder. You have to be an engineer, however none gnomes can join. Beginners are welcome.

Lost Order A group of friends and family who have found purpose in life by helping others, be it finding lost kittens or fighting big monsters.
OOC-Information: Lost Order is a small, quite casual RP/PvE guild with semi-regular roleplaying events (both character development as well as action oriented) and instance runs (mostly higher levels). Website: lostorder.eu (complete with a better introduction, blog and forums). Can also finds us on the server wiki, although the page is rather old.
To join: Contact Shakku (Leader), Hanthelia or Effex.
No RP experience is required as long as you are willing to learn. Membership not required for general meet-up events. However, for the plot-driven and character-building ones it would be too impractical to include outsiders.

(Community) The Moonguard Is a group of elves who's quest is to secretly seek and eradicate evil within the Alliance as well as to craft weapons against it.

Moonshine Is a semi-RP social guild, as such we do not have any particular theme other than being a group of good characters.
OOC-information Most of our RP is focused on random meet ups. All guild's major characters have RP background and are RPed, at least from time to time.
To join Contact Serenais through guild finder, whispers or ingame mail. We require good writing skills, some general in-guild activity overtime and above all, friendly attitude towards others - we do not want villains in our guild. For that reason, we have further restrictions on warlocks and death knights when it comes to RP side of our guild. People can also join in on RP without being part of the guild. <em/>

Redemptio Coronae: was started by Nouala Ravenwind and Blueleaff Moonsong as a response to the lack of qualified doctors due to most of the Alliance doctors serving at the battlefronts. The doctors of Redemptio Coronae try to fill that need by bringing healing to the peoples. Redemptio Coronae also has a corps of guards to safeguard the doctors as they work.

Name: Sept of Entwined Roots
Theme: A group of worgen with supporters from the other Alliance races that try to wake the wolf inside with animistic rituals and wisdom of the ancestors. The sept members and some of the Kin can join the Packmind.
Restrictions: The Sept is open for all worgen interested in their inner potential and strong-spirited supporters from the other races.

(Community)The society of Arcanists Mage and Magic based roleplay. Teaching, expeditions, research. Anything that mages do, in a mage tower.
OOC Information: The society is a community and not a guild. No level requirement as such, but the base is Morthawkes Tower in Westfall. Phased as part of a questline, so having completed the questline is essential.
To Join the RP Drop your head in the channel! /join Arcanists. Events will be planned

The Stormwind Guard Is a law enforcement military guild in Stormwind, appointed to uphold the laws of Stormwind and protect the innocent.
OOC: information The guild is a heavy RP guild with a fun and and relaxed OOC guild community. There are many opportunities for random RP with the denziens of Stormwind and we arrange internal guild events.
To Join: Contact Wólf or Harvian for an interview. We accept new RPers aslong as they pass the recruitment interview like anyone else, we also allow none guild memebers to be involved in our events, event situation willing. Your character must be compatible with a guard position, hence no IC warlocks.

As we have about 2 weeks until the planned Worgen and Goblin guilds will start popping up, I'll also try and have a list of them ready to add to the main sticky when it is time.

Then I also have a few more guilds which I'm pretty certain are roleplaying Guilds, which I'd like to have added. I'll try and get to their leader.
Some more guilds which I think are inactive, I'll be running some check up once we are a into cataclysm and things have settled, down.
