One of the first adventures you will embark upon within World of Warcraft will be that of choosing a name for your character. While it may not sound like much of an adventure in itself, it is wise to put some thought into selecting a name. The first impression that others players have about you will be based upon your name, it is a moniker that you will carry around with you for a long time, through many trials and adventures. It is your reputation and your glory. We receive many questions each month on our forums regarding the naming policy and its enforcement, so we thought it would be appropriate to create a spotlight post to clear a few things up and consolidate previous blue responses on the subject. Linked below you will find our naming policies for the World of Warcraft. These guidelines will assist you in making sure that your Character / Guild / Arena Team / Pet name is appropriate. Official Naming Policy page Please note that those lists are by no means exhaustive and the In-Game Support team will assess each incident on a case-by-case basis. The philosophy behind this policy is to that we want the game to be a fun and safe environment for all players. We strive to keep the experience epic, entertaining and clean regardless of your age, nationality or background. |

I don’t like my name, can you change it for me please?
If you make a genuine error when naming your character/ guild / arena team / pet, then please let us know right away and we will see if there is anything that we can do for you. What should I do if I see an offensive name?
To report a bad player name in-game: What happens after I make the report?
When I try to choose a name for my character the game client says ‘That name is unavailable’ but I can’t figure out why. It may simply be that the name has been taken (don’t forget that you might not be able to find the name on the Armory because the character who has that name is below level 10) or reserved (if a player utilises a paid character service, the old name is locked from use on that realm for 90 days). However, it could also be due to the name being added to an internal ‘black-list’ database. Given the amount of possible character permutations and regional languages covered by EU realms, this list of unusable names will not catch every single offensive or inappropriate name, so once again your reports are crucial to protecting that wholesome game experience we aim for. |

What will happen to me if the name I have chosen is reported as offensive?
Occasionally, it may be necessary for a Blizzard representative to assign your name of choice, as opposed to you doing it yourself through the client. If this is the case, you will be informed by in-game mail and email. You will need to submit a help request within 7 days of the original action with a selection of 4 possible alternatives (in order of preference). Once your petition reaches the top of the queue, an agent will review the request and inform you of the eventual outcome. If we are dealing with a Guild/Arena Team name then the name will most likely be changed to something neutral and inoffensive by one of our agents right away. A mail will be sent to the registered email address of the Battle.net account in question with instructions on how to go about changing the name. Usually this will comprise of submitting an in-game petition within 14 days of the original action containing a list of 4 possible alternatives (in order of preference). Once your petition reaches the top of the queue, an agent will review the request and inform you of the eventual outcome. Once a Guild/Arena Team name is changed, all members should logout and back in again in order to see the new name correctly. It is imperative that you page a Game Master as soon as you can because if the deadline lapses, you will have to keep the manually assigned name! If further account action is required, you will be notified via email. The GM made me change my name, but there are loads of other characters/Guilds with that name, why pick on me?!
I play on a roleplay realm, are there any specific things I should keep in mind when creating a name?
Only applied on the Roleplaying Servers It is imperative that you think very carefully before naming a character on a roleplay server because your name is not only important to your own entertainment but also that of others. I disagree with a decision or the reasoning behind that decision.
However, if you are unhappy with a decision made by one of our representatives, you can state your case in an email and send it to CSFeedbackEU@blizzard.com where it can be reviewed by a senior member of the team. |

Remember that it is your responsibility to ensure that your character/ guild / arena team / pet name is appropriate for this game. Even if your intentions are pure and no offense is meant, an inappropriate name will be changed for the good of the community as a whole. Therefore, it is vital that you choose names wisely. Do some research before assigning a name, use popular Internet search engines and encyclopaedia websites to see if your name has alternate connotations that you weren't aware of. A good rule of thumb is; If in any doubt at all, then simply choose another name!
In conclusion, there are many useful and helpful community resources out there for creating names, so be sure to check them out before embarking on your first adventure. Feel free to add your own thoughts below and remember to choose wisely, friends! |

Greetings
Today I saw another player with a name that's against the policy. When I have to report him I need to make a ticket, then a GM needs to take time to read it, have a chat with me about it, ... you know the drill. This process takes some time for the player because some just don't know how to start with it, and it scares them away. For the GM it can take a while to reas as well. No doubt that some people are really unclear with their tickets. Therefore it might be a good idea to make a special name reporting section. You simply need insert the information about the character you want to report. Perhaps something like the name of the player (obviously), the level, race and class. Then you can just tick off one of the reasons why you'd like to report him. The way of spelling, the meaning being offensive in a certain language (and you can insert the meaning behind it), etc. In my previous topic about this idea someone called "Ilovecritters" reminded me about guild names as well! You should be able to report player names, as well as guild names. Thank you, Ilovecritters for reminding me about it =) The positive points are that it might encoure more players to actually report them and keep the names appropriate. Also GM's save a lot of time because they don't need to chat with the person who reported. That very thing brings up a lot of positive points of its own: - since the GM doesn't have to read the ticket right away so he can reply to the one that reported asap, the tickets with big problems can be dealt with prio. - handling those reports can be done for example during a calm period of the day. The person who handles them also doesn't have to read the entire ticket to know what it is about. He can just open the box, read the name of the player, the reason why he's reported and done. Ontop of that, if the company makes a lot of statistics to compare the flow of certain things, those tick off boxes grant them to you instantly. The only negative part might be that suddenly way too many people start reporting and the GM's get overwhelmed ;-) In any case, the GM who talked to me about my report liked my idea =) |

I would like to report someone from Chamber of Aspects for the name <snip> (night elf hunter)
Edit: I’m afraid I’ve had to remove the character name in question, as the forums aren’t really the right place to report someone for something like this (and doing so effectively contravenes forum guidelines regarding “Naming and Shaming”). |

Greetings Shifted,
While you’re quite right about the character name mentioned being against our Naming Policies, please ensure that you follow the instructions in the start of this thread as we’re unable to accept reports of this kind via the forums. If you’re able to make a ticket about the situation, however, an member of our in-game team will be happy to take the appropriate action. :) |
