What happens to Forsaken if Sylvanas dies?

General
Sylvanas is linked to the survival of her faction in a way no other war chief has been.

If Sylvanas gets ‘killed’ by a trash mob in similar fashion to Vol’Jin, how would the Forsaken persist as free-willed entities?

Shouldn’t they revert to mindless slaves of the frozen throne? I wonder if Sylvanas is motivated by a way to leave a legacy, a way to protect the forsaken even if she is removed from existence.
Nothing much, they'll continue to be undead and "live" on untill someone or something kills them. Just without Sylvanas' valkyr no new forsaken will be created.
There will probably be infighting though as some one is going to try to take control and become the new ruler of the forsaken, which may reduce their numbers quite a bit depending how violent things get.
If Sylvannas ever dies there are several other interesting undead that can lead, you'll probably notice them by doing the forsaken quests.
Tell them only that the Banshee Queen is dead, and that Jaina Proudmoore died with her.

A) Considering Sylvanas has died a few times now and the Forsaken didn't all become slavering Ghouls in the time between her death and Val'kyr 1-up, I'd say it's safe to assume they can continue existing as they are without her - though they might find themselves significantly less evil without the subtle mind enslavement she's implied to have over them.

B) Of course she has no motivation to leave a legacy. She sees the Forsaken, and all others who follow her, as expendable meat she can use to stave off her own death. She's a shallow villain like that.
She have already died a few times so...
Putting down those creatures would only be merciful and would be the best course of action. Undead are abominations, monsters that defy the laws of nature. They were once noble souls, I am not denying that, but they have been twisted by dark magic and brought back as depraved monstruosities, a shell of what they once were. Would it not be just and honorable to put down those tormented souls and give them rest at last?
Nothing much would happen. The forsaken, including sylvanas regained their free will when the lich king started to lose his power (see warcraft 3 frozen throne expansion). Their continued free will is likely that the lich king can't dominate them again as he does other beings (the nerubians were also immune to his mental domination) rather than any protection granted by sylvanas.
people are theorizing the lillian voss might take over already as she has joined the forsaken in BFA

Even though she might act like it at times, she's not the Lich Queen..

The Forsaken have free will, just look at some of the Forsaken Argent Crusade NPCs who left her service because they don't agree with how she's running things.

The Forsaken follow her because they want to, not because they have to.

Undead lived well before the Lich king and Sylvanas never had control over them, even the Forsaken 'she' ressed with the Val'kyr.

Life, or 'unlife' moves on...
The forsaken in vanilla were raised without the Val kyr . They only joined after the Lich King was defeated and their numbers are fallen to 4/5 or less even. The theory goes they raised The lich queen after she jumped off ICC and died on the saronite spike. This is Old God blood btw the Val kyr raised her for unknown reason. When she was dreaming undeath state she was tormented in hell as she thought, the valkyr appeared and offered her a solution 1 of their number would replace her and so on as she died. The valkyr now are her supporters raising undead for the forsaken. There is a story behind this Old God and Nzoth is behind it. His plan is falling into place.
The Stormhiem storyline may make more sense come Bfa.

Stormheim story TL;DR: Odin's a jerk.
Hopefully they get a new leader who values them as something more than arrows in her quiver and who doesn't think of them as repulsive, pathetic and expendable.

Unless their potential new leader looks just like them, you're gonna be hard pressed to find a leader who will love the rotting, pus-filled bags of bones for what they are.
Well not to put the cat amongst the pigeons but they already have set the ground for new rulers of the forsaken with that council that nathanos informed sylvanas about.

And anyone who has been on the beta or watched the lorderon scenario sylvanas actually has an ability that she shouldnt have and that bolvar might be very peeved that she has and is using.

So we could very easily see her die either by our hands or by the jailer of the damned. Plus we still have to pay her back for what she tried todo when she was working with helya.

But in the end the forsaken would be fine without her and nathanos, they maybe a bit different and have different objectives, but they would survive.
