5.2 Update: You Can Keep Your Valor!

General
After reading your feedback and locking ourselves in dim, fluorescent-lit rooms for much deliberation, we have decided that we are NOT going to convert Valor to Justice and Justice to gold when 5.2 ships. Current Valor items will continue to require Valor in 5.2, and will be offered at a discount as listed in the PTR patch notes. Given that PvE and PvP currencies function quite a bit differently, Conquest will still convert to Honor and Honor to gold as previously discussed.

We’re making the Valor change for a couple of reasons, but primarily because we think a down-conversion under the new Mists endgame progression model just feels mean. We traditionally viewed this conversion process with each patch as a necessary evil to discourage hoarding—it’s not fun to feel like you can’t spend your Valor in the weeks before a new patch because you have to be ready to buy everything up. However, we have a Valor cap now to prevent excessive hoarding, many of the Valor rewards in 5.2 require raiding to acquire (for example, many of the ilevel-522 rewards are tied to Shado-Pan Assault reputation, which you’ll only gain rep with by raiding in the Throne of Thunder), and the LFR version has an ilvl-480 requirement, meaning you can’t hoard Valor on a brand new 90 and jump straight to the best stuff. All of these factors being considered, it doesn’t make good sense to take Valor away from players in this context. Down-conversions may occur for future patch releases depending on the circumstances, but for 5.2 it’s safe and snuggly where it is.

In addition, we’re making a change to ensure that there are some gear rewards available via the Kirin Tor Offensive and Sunreaver Onslaught, the two new factions with which players can earn reputation in 5.2 without raiding. The patch was shaping up to be a real challenge for players who don’t like raiding (including LFR), as our original design meant that no new Valor rewards would be available to them without needing to run Throne of Thunder. You can expect to see the Valor rewards on the Kirin Tor Offensive and Sunreaver Onslaught quartermasters updated on the 5.2 public test realms in the near future. These rewards are ilevel 496 and will only accommodate a few slots, as they aren’t intended to be very attractive to raiders (including those running LFR), but should give non-raiders something to shoot for in 5.2.

If you’ve already made plans and sank your Valor, don’t fret! As of this announcement, and even if you have 0 Valor currently, you still have enough time to cap out at 3000 Valor before patch 5.2 goes live. (It’s math!)

We’d love to hear your feedback about this change, and how you’re planning to earn, save, and spend Valor before the patch releases.
I’ve always been a PVPer, but with bots making battlegrounds unplayable I figured I would give PVE a shot. I’ve done a couple of raids using the LFR feature and I find it all right as an alternative to battlegrounds. As I complete raids, I – slowly – accumulate valor points and if the bot problem isn’t solved and I decide to continue playing PVE, I will eventually get capped. Is there any way for me to spend these valor points without earning reputation with various factions?

I should mention that there is nothing I dislike more in WoW than questing. I leveled my main character to 90 through doing quests and I did not enjoy it at all. I find it a lonely, monotonous, and aggravating experience and I probably wouldn’t do it even if I got paid to do it. Therefore, I’ve leveled my other characters to 90 through battlegrounds – despite the frustration that comes from losing due to having a team entirely made up of bots and the fact that a win usually only rewards 2-3% experience.

So far, I’ve used valor points to upgrade epic equipment I’ve either bought from the AH or acquired in raids, but since Blizzard is removing the upgrade function in 5.2 I would like to know whether or not there is a way to spend valor points without having to do daily quests. Quests are excruciating – daily quests are just plain torture. I’d have to be a masochist to log on every single day to do something I despise.

Anyway, I guess that was an unnecessarily long post only to ask a simple question, but there you have it.
!@#$ and I have buy a 476 gear and could have waited :-(

So this means the patch won't go live on February 26-27 (the date some websites, and people, assume for the patch to be released)? Because if you start at 0 VP now, you'd need 3 weeks to reach the cap and that's one week later or March 5-6.

I think this is a good change, although I have just spend all the VP I had already capped on all my 90s for the past weeks. But atleast I've got something to do now :)
Its better this way, though I had no problem even if valor was reset.
So in 3 weeks will 5.2 go live then?
Thank you. I bought an item with my valor collected since MOP started, at the weekend. I was fretting on getting enough to use the 700 odd points I had left, now I don't have to fret. :)
Yes, this will make all LFR guys happy, as well as those who likes PvP (but gives PvE a shot).
Exactly.
Those who earned HCs gear prior 5.2 are even more happy, they may throw away thie HCs gear with no even shadow of hasitation!
More happy joy for LFR nabs, anb even more frustration for raiders, hooray!

In 5.2 you’ll be able to gain reputation outside of daily quests.
We’re adding an option where you get to choose which reputation you would like to champion when you run you first dungeon and scenario of the day.
You can also get reputation by raiding; actually, it’s the only way you can get reputation with this specific faction, the Shado-Pan Assault.

Here’s a nice guide about reputation changes on Wowjuju if you want to read more and see some screenshots of how the interface will probably look like.

Bashiok's post mentioned last week of Feb as the most probable, subject to change.
I do not know what other PVP'ers think but it seems like another kick in the stones to the PVP community. I would be interested to know why downranking Valor to Justice is mean but Conquest to Honor is not ? Is Valor so much harder to earn than Conquest ? Ah well off to do my dailies so I can stockpile some Valor.
I was actually hoping for a VP reset :(
Thats great news, well done =).

You can get reputation by raiding? For a different faction than the Shado-Pan Assault? How does that work?

If this will only apply to the first dungeon and scenario of the day, I'd argue that it's sort of similar to dailies in the way that you are forced to log on daily in order to make progress in the game rather than getting to play at your own pace. I might have time to do 3 dungeons on Monday and no time to even get on the computer on Tuesday and Wednesday. One of the things I like the most about the PVP system is the option to reach the conquest point cap in one day and you have 6 days to do it -- and you don't need reputation with any faction in order to spend it.

Though this change doesn't make things perfect as I will still be falling behind due to not having a chance to log on daily, it IS a step in the right direction.

Thanks for the reply. I'll read up on the reputation changes now :-)

According to Nakatoir, you are able to cap your VP before 5.2 goes live, even if you start at 0 now. This rules out the last week of February as that is a week short and you're only able to reach 2k.
Woohoo great change.

You have made Keg a happy dwarf. Now give new beard options please.
bad idea tbh should have just reset like stated which has always been the way in previous tiers if players cant handle that after several expansion then dont play quit and save us the QQ.
Nooo, they overwrote my announcement thread! :'(

Nah, it's great news for me. Not that I was using Valor for anything but at least I don't have to stress using it anywhere before the patch.
