I received an email saying that my Diablo II account and all the characters will expire 

15 days before your Diablo II (2000) characters expire, we will send you an email notification, reminding you to log in and prevent the characters from being deleted. This is only true if you have added your Diablo II (2000) account to your Battle.net account. Inactive classic Battle.net accounts are deleted at regular intervals.
